LABOUR was accused of going soft on knife crime last night as beleaguered Jacqui Smith ruled out automatic jail sentences for youngsters carrying blades.

As she prepared to launch a £100million anti-knife initiative, the Home Secretary said she was determined to tackle the orgy of knife violence on Britain’s streets.

But she dismissed Tory leader David Cameron’s call for carrying a knife to mean an automatic jail term.

Ministers are relying on a raft of measures, including community sentences and forcing youngsters to meet the families of knife victims.

Fewer than one in five youngsters caught carrying a knife are jailed.
