Prime wealthy donors who bankrolled Labour under Tony Blair broke ranks to reveal they may not support his struggling successor.

Even Mr Brown's colleague, Health Secretary Alan Johnston, likening the Prime Minister to a Wimbledon tennis player, said: "He is not interested in strutting his stuff on the show courts."

The humiliations came as Mr Brown scrambled to avert disaster after close friend and Labour leader in the Scottish Parliament Wendy Alexander resigned in shame over campaign donations.
