TOWN’S WATER TURNS TO WINE

CHEERS: A worker picks the grapes for the harvest

Wednesday October 8,2008

‘A miracle’, shout locals...but it was all down to bad plumbing...

Families thought they were witnessing a miracle when wine flowed from their taps during a grape festival.

But it wasn’t down to divine intervention – just very bad plumbing.

Sparkling, chilled white wine should have been flowing into a marble fountain in the town square during the annual Marino grape festival on Sunday.

Instead it gushed out of kitchen taps in dozens of homes, to the delight of residents in the Italian hilltop town. The mayor, Adriano Palozzi, a priest and locals had all gathered round the fountain to give a prayer of thanks to the Virgin Mary. Everyone had a plastic beaker at the ready to drink a free glass or two of Marino DOC.

But they were left disappointed as, instead of fresh wine, out poured the usual water.

Then came a shout of “Miracolo” from a house overlooking the square as a woman rushed on to her balcony to reveal that wine was flowing from her kitchen tap. Eventually the cause of the error was discovered. Pipes that supply the fountain from a local vineyard had been switched to the domestic supply feeding homes.

Word quickly spread through the town in the renowned wine-making Alban Hills south of Rome and people began filling up containers.

As workmen moved in to fix the problem, the event was the talk of the town yesterday. One local called Anna said: “I was in the kitchen ready to do the housework and had filled up a bucket of water.

“I was going to mop the floor with it but I immediately noticed a sweet smell from the tap and it was also slightly yellow. I recognised instantly it was wine.

“I called my neighbours and they turned on their taps and it was the same. The word quickly spread and everyone filled up bottles and plastic containers with the wine.

“It all happened at the same time as the festival, so everyone thought it was a miracle. I don’t think the mayor and the other officials were very happy, though.”

Mayor Palozzi said: “It was a surprise which was due to a technical error and it is being fixed.

“It was not a miracle, it was a mistake. Several houses have been affected and people were calling it a miracle which it wasn’t. I don’t think it dampened the enthusiasm of people at the festival and everyone still had a good time.”

The festival – called Sagra dell Uva – commemorates the return of Admiral Marcantonio Colonna to his home town of Marino following a celebrated victory over the Turks at the Battle of Lepanto in October 1571.

TOWNS WATER TURNS INTO WINE..

Good job this did not happen in Browns Bl**dy Britian. There would have been instant, yearly tax rises, a smoking ban in everybodys house and all households would have to apply for a drinks licence, an entertainment licence and be persecuted by the Performing Rights Society claiming royalties.
