DOG SURVIVES TWO WEEKS TRAPPED IN COMPOST HEAP

The real-life Lassie survived two-weeks trapped under a compost heap

Sunday October 5,2008

By Andrea Perry

WHEN their pet went missing, a retired couple feared she was one of the hundreds of dogs stolen from Britain’s streets each year.

After 16 days of searching for their beloved border terrier Ruby, including contacting vets and police and launching a poster campaign to offer a reward, Tim and Judith Brown had almost given up hope of finding her alive.

Then Mrs Brown heard squeaking coming from their compost heap.

The terrier had becoming trapped under a rock designed to prevent rabbits getting into the garden. “It felt like a miracle,” said Judith, “I got the shakes, I was so overwhelmed.

“At first I thought I must have imagined it. Then I heard it again and I said ‘Ruby?’ I felt stupid calling for her because I thought it couldn’t possibly be her. Then the squeaks started getting stronger. When I took the stone away and found her, it felt like pulling her out of a grave.

“She was too weak and shaken to express delight. I carried her to the house and then she drank a massive amount.”

Ruby was thin and dehydrated but later that morning a vet pronounced her to be otherwise fit and well.

The couple, of Southwater, West Sussex, cannot believe how the three-year-old dog survived under the compost heap for two weeks.

Ruby was a 40th wedding anniversary present from their children, hence the name.

What made the dog’s disappearance even worse for the Browns was that their nine-year-old Labrador Assumpter had been diagnosed with terminal cancer.
