Murray celebrates victory over Nadal to reach the US Open final

Monday September 8,2008

By Julia White for express.co.uk

ANDY Murray will today play in the first grand slam final of his career after a sensational victory over world No 1 Rafael Nadal in the US Open semi-final.

The 21-year-old played the match of his life in New York to beat Spain's Nadal 6-2 7-6 4-6 6-4.

And he is now looking to become the first British man to win a grand slam since Fred Perry's US Open victory in 1936.

He will face four-time defending champion Roger Federer in tonight's final - and is the first Briton to contest a grand slam final since Greg Rusedski lost to Patrick Rafter in the 1997 US Open final.

Murray returned to the court yesterday after a 26-hour rain delay two sets up but a break down to Nadal, who came out fighting.

The Spaniard served out the first game of the day to love to and then took the third set to move back into contention.

Murray went into a rollercoaster fourth set under pressure.

Despite earning seven break points in the second game, the Scot could not break his opponent's serve.

And he was punished for his missed opportunity by handing Nadal his own service in the following game.

But after two games going with serve, Murray regained his composure and was able to break back in the sixth game to level the set 3-3.

After holding serve convincingly, a rejuvenated Murray upped the pressure on his opposite number and finally took the match on Nadal's serve.

At 40-30 to Nadal in the final game, Murray saved game point by winning a superb rally and he earned match point by winning another after coming to the net and putting away a forehand volley.

Nadal tried a drop shot that Murray scampered to reach and he sealed victory with a winner past the world number one that was straightforward in its execution but life altering for the 21-year-old from Dunblane.

MAGIC MURRAY BEATS NADAL TO MAKE US OPEN FINAL

It is nice to see this online but I was extremely baffled and confused as to why it was not in my local express. Instead there was an article about Roger Federer. I like this man but I very much doubt that papers printed in Switzerland are going to mark Andy Murray's achievements.
Come on Express what gives do you have a down on Andy Murray or does your reporter?
