MANCHESTER CITY have won the race to sign Shaun Wright-Phillips in a deal that will reunite him with his former club.

Manager Mark Hughes is closing in on a cut-price move for the winger, with Chelsea now ready to accept an initial fee of £8.5m for the player they signed for £21m three years ago.

And Hughes is also refusing to accept defeat in his battle to recruit Craig Bellamy, having again attempted to broker a deal with West Ham yesterday despite their reluctance to lose the Wales international.

City have taken out a £30m bank loan to fund their moves before the transfer window closes and despite misleading quotes attributed to the Wright-Phillips camp yesterday, he will leave London and return to the North-west.

The Daily Express revealed on Monday that Hughes was chasing Wright-Phillips and his move to Eastlands will be a popular one among City fans.

Hughes’ attempts to team up again with Bellamy, who played for him at Blackburn and for Wales, will prove far more problematic. West Ham issued a statement earlier in the week maintaining they would not part with the striker.

City are undeterred, but it is going to take an outlandish offer to pull off the transfer.
