OWEN SCORES MAGPIES WINNER

Michael Owen

Tuesday August 26,2008

Michael Owen's extra-time strike gave Newcastle a deserved 3-2 win in their thrilling Carling Cup tie at Coventry.

The Magpies seemed to have the clash sewn up at the Ricoh Arena as goals from Charles N'Zogbia and James Milner put them in front.

But Clinton Morrison scored in first-half stoppage time and Scott Dann did the same in the second to set up an extra 30 minutes in which Owen, on as a substitute, took centre stage.

Milner was a constant thorn in Coventry's side, and it was hardly a surprise that he played a major role in both Newcastle's goals.

The first came as a result of Milner's burst of pace down the left, which caught Coventry napping, allowing the former Leeds man to send a low cross towards the near post which N'Zogbia, without a goal since last September, managed to squeeze home.

Milner scored the second himself with a cross-shot which found its way into the far corner.

But Morrison threw his side a lifeline with a well-struck shot which hit the net just as the stadium announcer was confirming one additional minute to be added on.

Time was running out for City in the second period when Dann leapt highest to power the tie into an extra half hour.

However, Owen - who replaced Geremi - had the final word with the winner.
