Girls Aloud are involved in recording an anti-knife crime song

Tuesday August 26,2008

Actors and sports stars have come together to record a rap to discourage young people from carrying knives.

The collaboration, UK Flow, is led by Sheffield-based actor and singer Stephen Nicholas, who wrote the track called Don't Carry Knives. Nicholas got the idea for the song after hearing about the many deaths from stabbings across the country.

Joining Nicholas at Yellow Arch studios in central Sheffield were world champion boxer Johnny Nelson and Hollyoaks star Lee Otway. Girls Aloud and players from the England football and rugby squads have also given the project their support.

Casualty actors Luke Bailey and Elyes Gabel along with DJ and presenter Marvyn Willams were also due to add their vocals to the piece.

It is hoped the song will make youngsters think twice about carrying a knife after the recent spate of fatal stabbings across the country.

The project has the backing of MP Richard Caborn, who visited the studio.

Nicholas said he hoped the song would raise awareness about the dangers of carrying knives. The 30-year-old, originally from Doncaster, said: "Music brings people together, it unites communities. We are recording this song to unite these people and warn them of the dangers of carrying knives."

He said he hoped money raised from the single would help fund more workshops to get bored youngsters "off the streets" and give them "something to focus on and believe in".

Recording his vocals in the studio, Otway said: "If this song helps change just one person's mind on going out with a knife or being involved with knife crime, then we will have made a difference."

It is hoped the single will be go on sale next month after a launch in Sheffield city centre.
