JOHNSTON IN LATE BID FOR GIMCRACK

Story Image

CRITIC: Mark Johnston

Friday August 15,2008

By Express Racing Reporter

MARK JOHNSTON is the fiercest critic of declarations at the 48-hour stage, which he claims causes an epidemic of non runners.

He is more keen on another relatively new initiative – the supplementary entry stage for big races.

Next Wednesday’s Gimcrack Stakes at York is one of the top two-year-old races of the year and Johnston has added Sheikh Hamdan’s Weatherstaff to the other 21 possibles.

Weatherstaff’s only run to date was a win in an Ayr maiden which has worked out well.

All the leading Totesport Ebor runners stand their ground but five will need to drop out for

second favourite Wicked Daze to get his chance, and two more for the well-backed Pippa Greene to line up.

Ordnance Row showed his love of both soft ground and Salisbury racecourse when he won his first Group race, the Toteswinger Sovereign Stakes, at the age of five yesterday. Ordnance Row’s only defeat in four appearances at the Wiltshire track came in the same race 12 months ago when he was second to Pride of Nation.

His trainer Richard Hannon remains the only trainer to send out more than 100 winners so far in 2008 and this valuable success took his haul to 128.
