BACK HENRY TO BE CROWNED KING OF GOODWOOD

Story Image

Henrythenavigator riden by Johnny Murtagh

Wednesday July 30,2008

By Rolf Johnson

THE Niagara Falls guide wowed his audience with awesome facts about the power of the cascading waters until one tripper piped up, “But what’s to stop it?”

And what’s to stop the torrent of Ballydoyle winners?

At Goodwood today their Henrythenavigator attempts, in the BCG Sussex Stakes, to equal Duke Of Marmalade’s score of four out of four Group One victories this season.

Between them they would have contributed fifty per cent of Ballydoyle sixteen triumphs at the highest level and heading for uncharted territory.

It’s accepted that Ballydoyle runners start odds-on. After twice defeating New Approach, Henrythenavigator was odds-on at Royal Ascot to repeat Rock of Gibraltar’s feat of the Guineas double and the St James’s Palace Stakes.

He duly did, with one amazing change of pac,  though Raven's Pass was closing again at the line.

Henrythenavigator was beaten twice at two – on soft ground – hope there for rivals if the Goodwood weather breaks.
Raven's Pass though is another fast ground horse.

Major Cadeaux can handle anything and if any stable can be mentioned in the same breath as Ballydoyle’s it is that of Richard Hannon.

He’s the only trainer to have broken through the century mark – in fact he’s nearly forty winners ahead of the next nearest stable.

Hannon won the Sussex with outsider Reel Buddy four years ago; Major Cadeaux is a better model.

Andrew Balding is enjoying his best season and Dream Eater is very nearly his best horse – odd therefore Dream Eater has yet to add to Balding’s harvest.

He was fifth to Henrythenavigator in the Guineas.

Peter Chapple-Hyam’s pair, Tariq and Winker Watson are, like their trainer, trying to put their seasons back on course.

Ballydoyle sails on; Johnny Murtagh almost lost the steering when fumbling his reins on Henrythenavigator at Royal Ascot and maybe that contributed to the impression that Raven’s Pass was closing.

Murtagh said: "I love to promote this horse. He has the courage all the great ones do."

On reflection, no, there seems nothing to stop Ballydoyle.

Murtagh suggested after first Rip Van Winkle then Mastercraftsman leapt to the head of the Two Thousand Guineas betting that there were “plenty of nice two-year-olds to come.”

We’ve already seen Set Sail and Westphalia, Ballydoyle’s runners in the Veuve Clicquot Champagne Stakes.

The former won a Gowran maiden but the latter was exposed by Bushranger, himself put in his place by Mastercraftsman.

Anyway in Group Twos Ballydoyle are not invincible.

Likeable Champagne sorts are Hannon’s Soul City whose Newbury maiden could hardly have worked out better – likewise Mick Channon’s Orizaba who won his maiden at the Berkshire course by nine lengths.

Orizaba fell out of the stalls in the Coventry where he failed to do himself justice. Narrow preference is for Soul City.
