FRANKIE’S SHADOW KERRIN BACK TO OZ

MOVING ON: Kerrin McEvoy

Monday July 28,2008

By Rolf Johnson

KERRIN McEVOY, so impressive in his five seasons as number two to Frankie Dettori at Godolphin, has ridden his last race, for the foreseeable future, in Europe.

McEvoy returns to his native Australia after accepting Sheikh Mohammed’s offer to ride the team of 300-plus horses which the  Godolphin boss has built up down under.

McEvoy, 27, proved himself a world class jockey in Britain, with more than 300 winners including the 2004 St Leger on Rule Of Law.

His final ride was Collection at Maisons-Laffitte yesterday in the Prix Eugene Adam. Collection finished fifth to Henry Cecil’s one-time Derby favourite Twice Over.

Twice Over lost that position when third behind Tartan Bearer and Frozen Fire in the Dante but restored his reputation with this comfortable Group Two success. On the same card, Percolator lost her unbeaten French record in the Group Two Prix Robert Papin.

Paul Cole’s filly was too quick for her rivals over the first five furlongs, but the last 100 metres were her undoing.

Percolator, who may now head to York for the Nunthorpe, was caught and passed in the closing stages by Italian colt Lui Rei.

Trainers Mick Quinlan  and Richard Fahey are the only British raiders as the seven-day Galway Festival gets under way tonight with a relatively low-key card.

Fahey sends over Halla San (7.00) and Lecanvey (7.35), while Quinlan is represented in the latter race by  Metal Madness.
