William Haggas: No Brainer

Thursday July 24,2008

By Rolf Johnson

The choice is between £180,000 for the Group 2 Prix Eugene Adam at Maisons-Laffitte against fellow three-year-olds or taking on older horses in the £56,000 Group 2 Skybet Stakes at York.

That was the dilemma facing Newmarket trainer William Haggas. But he feels it’s “a bit of a no-brainer”.

Royal Ascot winner Collection is one of the two best horses in his Somerville Lodge Stables – the other, Aqlaam, also won at the royal meeting.

“Different distances, different types, delighted to have them,” said Haggas. “Best thing we did, not running Collection in the Derby. He wouldn’t have been ready for the test. He’s on an upward curve so let’s get on with it.”

Victories at York and at the royal meeting propelled him to Group level and he could even be Kerrin McEvoy’s last Group winner before his expected return to Australia.

On Sunday there are five possible Eugene Adam raiders including Henry Cecil’s one-time Derby favourite Twice Over whose placing in the St James’s Palace retrieved some of his reputation.

“We can’t run away from Twice Over,” said Haggas. “Nor can we keep going at the pace we have been setting but we’ve got other big shouts this weekend.

“They’ve all got Musaalem and King’s Apostle to beat in the Totesport International at Ascot on Saturday and I run a particularly nice three-year-old filly Basque Beauty there on Sunday.”
