MCKENZIE STEERS PROTEAS TOWARDS DRAW

Story Image

Neil McKenzie

Monday July 14,2008

Neil McKenzie's tour de force hundred finally ended after nine-and-a-quarter hours at Lord's - but by then he had made almost certain that the first Test would end in a draw.

McKenzie, suffering with a groin strain towards the end of his 444-ball 138 and batting with his South Africa captain Graeme Smith as a runner, was unable to move his feet towards an attempted cut shot and edged a ball from England seamer James Anderson behind.

Ryan Sidebottom produced a superb in-swinging delivery to clean bowl Jacques Kallis but Hashim Amla (82no) was joined in the middle by first-innings centurion Ashwell Prince, with the Proteas 16 runs in profit on 362 for three.
