BURROW’S MISS GIFTS WIGAN WIN

Story Image

HOWLER: Rob Burrow

Saturday July 5,2008

By Martin Richards

Wigan 23, Leeds 22

Leeds’ Rob Burrow missed a dramatic last-minute penalty that allowed Wigan to cling on to a thrilling victory – giving them a notable double over the Rhinos.

Aussie winger Cameron Phelps had defied a broken nose to grab a brace of tries for the Warriors and they looked in total charge at 23-6 ahead in the second half.

But the Rhinos went on the rampage with 16 unanswered points – and could have nicked it but for Burrow’s miss.

Leeds, down 17-0 at the break, came back with a Danny McGuire try only for Darrell Goulding to register his eighth try of the season.

But the Rhinos gave themselves hope when McGuire put Ryan Hall over, with Keith Senior bringing them closer with another score. Incredibly Gareth Ellis, together with a Burrow goal, narrowed the deficit to just a point – but Wigan clung on for victory.

Phelps opened the scoring, and added a second try after just 10 minutes.

And the Warriors widened the gap on 30 minutes when Liam Colbon collected the ball to touch down.

Pat Richards then confirmed Wigan’s first-half superiority with a drop-goal.

Leeds needed a quick score but video referee Steve Ganson disallowed a Diskin try for a knock-on after Burrow had gone close.

The Rhinos finally put their first points on the board after 50 minutes when Burrow made a long-range break and regained his feet to send half-back McGuire over for a simple try and Kevin Sinfield added the points. Leeds’ late effort was truly stirring stuff – but they fell agonisingly short.

Wigan – Tries: Phelps (2), Colbon, Goulding. Goals: Richards (3). DG: Richards.

Leeds – Tries: McGuire, Hall, Senior, Ellis. Goals: Sinfield (2), Burrow.
