ARETHA FRANKLIN: ARETHA SINGS THE BLUES (SPV) ****

Story Image

Aretha's voice is too complex to be dismissed

Friday June 27,2008

By Robert Spellman

Many believe Aretha’s Columbia work to be too slick; the emotional torrent that Atlantic would unleash being stuffed into a cocktail dress and required to “entertain”.

The high-sheen arrangements can grate but Franklin’s voice is too complex to be dismissed.

More than once the listener is caught in a web of feelings that aren’t easily placed – Drinking Again and Without The One You Love being two good examples.
