SANTINI: Keen on Hearts job

Monday June 23,2008

By Scott Burns

FORMER French national coach Jacques Santini has put his name forward to become the next manager of Hearts.

Express Sport can reveal that the ex-Tottenham manager’s Scottish representative, Alex McLaughlin, has told Tynecastle owner Vladimir Romanov that he is ready to take over from current caretaker Stevie Frail.

The 56-year-old, in charge of France at Euro 2004, took a break after leaving Auxerre two seasons ago but is now keen for a return.

McLaughlin said: “I have put Jacques Santini’s name forward to Hearts and I am waiting to hear back from them.

“Hearts are on the lookout for a top-drawer coach with experience in the British game and, for me, Jacques Santini ticks all their boxes.

“He has shown throughout his managerial career that he is a top-level coach and I would be surprised if Hearts didn’t want to follow things up.”

The vastly-experienced coach, who has won the league and cup with Lyon, has also managed Toulouse, Lille, CA Lisieux and led France into Euro 2004.

Santini, who speaks fluent English, has also worked as technical director with Lyon, stepping up after leading them to the first of their current seven-in-a-row domestic dominance.

The Frenchman also had a short and unhappy spell with Tottenham after Euro 2004.

Santini spent big but a behind-the-scenes bust-up with former director of football Frank Arnesen saw him quit after just 13 games in charge.

He is keen to have another crack at the British game and would be willing to listen to Hearts.

It could also be a big box-office appointment for Romanov after months scrambling around looking for a boss.

He failed in his move to get Mark McGhee from Motherwell and has since pulled the plug on moves for ex-Stoke boss Gudjon Thordarson and Artmedia Bratislava’s Vladimir Weiss.
