UK NEWSCARS VANISH FROM THE ROADS AS HIGH PRICE OF FUEL BITESSaturday June 21,2008 By Polly BuchananDRIVERS are slowing down, staying at home or turning to bicycles in a bid to combat rocketing petrol prices. Roads are becoming so quiet that it “feels like the school holidays already” the length and breadth of the country, a report compiled from RAC patrols said yesterday.[>
One patrolman in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, said: “The traffic has just disappeared.”[>
Patrolmen in Cambridge reported roads are clear at a time of year when they are usually a source of “mayhem”.[>
Motorists are increasingly asking RAC patrols to check their tyre pressure, as incorrect pressure can significantly increase fuel consumption. They are also asking for advice on how to save fuel. [>
[> The patrols noted that park-and- ride sites are busier, more motorists are sticking to speeds of 50-60mph and there are more cyclists on the road – like supermodel Elle Macpherson, who is regularly seen riding her bicycle in London. [>
RAC Patrol of the Year Iain Vale said: “We have seen more call-outs for people running out of fuel because their £30 simply doesn’t buy them as many miles as it did at the beginning of the year and considerably less than this time last year.[>
[> “The majority of vehicles are trying to hit 56mph, which is the optimum speed for fuel economy. We’re getting a great deal more breakdowns because cars are simply running out of fuel, sometimes in very dangerous situations. [>
“We love to go on about safety issues and being greener, but it’s really only when we are hit in the pocket that people begin to feel personally involved. The cost of motoring has now taken over from the weather as the main topic of conversation during call-outs.”[>
Friends of the Earth’s transport campaigner Richard Dyer welcomed the RAC patrols’ findings. [>
He said: “Avoiding unnecessary car use, using buses and trains and choosing more fuel-efficient cars will save money and cut transport’s contribution to climate change. The Government must help motorists by investing extra oil tax revenues in public transport and cycling facilities, encouraging greener motoring and pushing for tough EU laws on the fuel-efficiency of all new cars.”[>
The RAC patrols also reported people are combining journeys and only driving when it is essential. [>
Companies are asking their drivers to reduce speed.[>
The RAC said feedback from customers included cars being too expensive to run now, parents walking their children to school and caravanners not travelling as far to holiday destinations.[>
Petrol prices yesterday hit 118.48p per litre for unleaded and 131.84p for diesel. [>

Can you drive a car, or have you not passed a test? Just wondering.
The car is the biggest cash cow for tax. If we all gave our cars up, there would be one Hell of a hole in the Treasury's income, so what do think will happen? New taxes would be introduced to compensate, window tax might make a comeback for starters.

I know the feeling of homesickness after spending ten years abroad.
Unfortunately, you are homesick for a country that no longer exists, this labour government has wantonly trashed, destroyed and annihilated our beautiful country and our freedoms.
Keep your memories, don't ever return to Britain,it would break your heart.
I wish you well.

IF PEOPLE REALLY ARE TAKING TO THEIR BIKES

It will be but a matter of weeks before the Scotch robdog levies massive taxes on pedal power.
Massive road tax on bikes, and expensive bicycle licences, give old slag jaw a couple of days,he'll think up some stupendous ways to part cyclists from their money.
God,how I detest New Labour.

THE TRUTH OF IT ?

TBR News.org – June 20, 2008
“I would say that at least 200 people working here in D.C. are fully aware, and have read the official and highly classified reports, that the oil people are grabbing everything they can here before the pliant and crooked Bush and Cheney have to leave. They want the ability to drill offshore when and where they please and now, with Bush’s help, they are sewing up all the Iraqi oil production with the usual Bush-approved no bid leases. Everything here is now ‘no bid.’ If Halliburton needed 300 billions in U.S. taxpayer’s money, Bush would demand it and the ass-kissing Congress would cheerfully give it to him, just like they have just given the crooked and conspiratorial U.S. telephone companies like AT&T and their parent company, SBC, a free pass on their connivance with Bush to snoop on all of us. In Washington , money not only talks, it screams. The high gas prices? The Arabs are to blame? Oh no, Bush and Cheney are directly responsible for this. Sweet crude light is now $45 a barrel in Saudi Arabia although the industry claims this is not so. It is and their profits are not only obscene and criminal but they are doing terrible damage to the American economy and driving more and more people here into bankruptcy. The only solution is to nationalize the oil industry, all of it, and then prosecute the thieves who have, entirely on their own, pushed gas to what is going to be $5 a gallon, just in time for the summer vacation driving times. This is not an accident. It will also not be an accident when the price of gas drops a dollar or so after the season is over but guess what? The price of heating oil will shoot up just in time for winter! Nationalize the oil and prosecute the corporate heads and see how fast the gas prices drop.”
