ARDA ENDS SWISS DREAM

The Swiss are now out

Thursday June 12,2008

By Andrew Warshaw

Switzerland 1 Turkey 2

Joint hosts Switzerland were eliminated from Euro2008 as Turkey snatched a dramatic injury-time winner on a storm-lashed night of tension.

What was billed as a do-or-die occasion was given extra spice as the first fixture between the sides since Turkey won 4-2 in Istanbul in November 2005 in the second leg of a World Cup play-off.

The Turks were eliminated on the away-goals rule and both sets of players infamously slugged it out afterwards.

Security was stepped up around the St Jakob-Park stadium, while inside a red curtain of support swept around the ground which was soon engulfed by a thunderstorm.

For a few minutes it looked as if the match might have to be abandoned, but the worst of the rain passed by half-time and the pitch improved in the second period.

While it remained slippery, the players were at least able to hold their footing.

Without their record scorer Alexander Frei, the Swiss named 20-year-old Eren Derdiyok for only his fourth appearance.

Volkan made two fine stops for Turkey, while at the other end Arda headed against a post.

Switzerland went ahead with a goal that owed as much to the conditions as to the quick

thinking of Derdiyok, who turns 20 on Thursday.

Forced out wide he hit a hard, low cross into the box that eluded goalkeeper Volkan Demirel, and bounced in and out of a puddle before falling perfectly for Yakin, who poked it into the empty net from two metres.

Yakin was then guilty of the miss of the tournament as he volleyed wide from three yards. And he was made to pay on 57 minutes when substitute Semih Senturk headed Turkey level.

Then in stoppage time Arda broke Swiss hearts when he won it for Turkey with a deflected shot that sends them into a winner-takes-all showdown with the Czech Republic on Sunday.
