Friday June 6,2008

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has launched an investigation into police handling of the events leading up to the death of Arsema Dawit.

The 15-year-old was found lying in a pool of blood after a frenzied knife attack in a lift close to her family's south London home.

Arsema's family have hit out at the Metropolitan Police after it emerged they complained a man had assaulted and threatened to kill her in April.

Friends of the teenager said she had been stalked by a man who met her through an Eritrean church where she was a member of the choir.

On Thursday her mother, Tsehainesh Medhani, said "a light had gone out" of her life because of the murder.

In a statement read by her solicitor, Ms Medhani said: "I am absolutely devastated and cannot believe what has happened to my daughter. I came to this country from Eritrea to live in safety.

"When my daughter was threatened, I went to the police seeking protection. Sadly, this did not happen.

"I have lost a precious, beautiful and much-loved daughter who was kind, generous and loving."

Arsema was stabbed up to 10 times in a vicious attack as she made her way home from the Harris Academy in Bermondsey, south east London.

Her body was discovered by a neighbour in the block of flats where her family lives near Waterloo railway station.
