CITY'S SQUINTY BRIDGE TO REOPEN AFTER CABLES FIXED

Saturday June 7,2008

By Paul Gilbride Scottish Political Reporter

A £20million bridge which closed after one of its support wires snapped will reopen at the end of the month.

Glasgow’s Clyde Arc, also known as the “Squinty Bridge”, has been shut to traffic since January after one of its cable supports broke and fell across the road.

Repair work on the recently built structure was only supposed to take a few weeks but an inspection found a crack in another cable.

The decision was made to replace all 28 cables with a new product made using milled steel.

The bridge will reopen on June 29.

City councillor Ruth Simpson, member for land and environment services, said: “The Clyde Arc has proven to be extremely popular with the people of Glasgow and I am very pleased that we are approaching a point where we will be able to give them back their bridge.

“It has a very important role to play in the regeneration of the Clyde and, specifically, the communities on either bank. Clearly, it’s been disappointing to be without the bridge in recent months, but public safety is our priority and time and caution has been necessary.”

The council said the work had been carried out at no cost to taxpayers.
