Mark Hughes: Ultimatum

Tuesday June 3,2008

By Peter Edwards

Mark Hughes has told Chelsea they have 48 hours to fulfil his dream of becoming Chelsea manager before he accepts an offer from Manchester City.

Hughes would take the Chelsea job in a heartbeat but Roman Abramovich is aiming higher and will make a renewed effort to land No1 choice Carlo Ancelotti.

The approach to AC Milan includes Didier Drogba and Andriy Shevchenko as bait as they have so far refused all advances. Luiz Felipe Scolari remains high on Abramovich’s wish-list, but it is unlikely the Portugal boss will commit to the Blues before the end of Euro 2008.

Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon has been advocating the British option, of either Blackburn boss Hughes or Sunderland’s Roy Keane, but City’s approach for Hughes has forced the Londoners to make a decision.

With Sam Allardyce lined up to replace Hughes at Ewood Park, Blackburn are ready to give permission for City to talk to him, subject to a compensation deal. Hughes is hoping a similar concession will be granted to Chelsea.

AC Milan last night faced an extraordinary backlash from their fans after opening talks to sign Drogba from under the noses of bitter rivals Inter and Jose Mourinho, whose appointment was confirmed yesterday.

Milan’s move was a deliberate challenge to Mourinho, who groomed Drogba at Chelsea and had already declared he was at the top of his shopping list. Milan president Adriano Galliano said: “Our coach, Carlo Ancelotti, wants Didier Drogba.

“I do not see anything wrong in a transfer. Talks have begun.”

But last night Milan fans besieged websites, saying they do not want Drogba. One said: “Milan have been a fair play team and we don’t need a diver.” Mourinho, who also wants Frank Lampard and Ricardo Carvalho, is expected to have a huge advantage in the race for the striker because Inter will be playing Champions League football next year, unlike AC.

But crucially, Chelsea are using Drogba as a lever to persuade Milan to let them have Ancelotti.

Lampard, who has a new contract offer from Chelsea of £130,000 a week, is tempted by a move to the San Siro but is torn between the two.
