A man questioned by police about a stabbing attack that killed two children and wounded a baby has been released.

The 39-year-old man, believed to be the father of the three children, will face no further action, police said.

The children were found at a house in Carshalton, south of London, on Friday after police and the ambulance service were called.

Hospital officials said a six-month-old baby girl was in "critical but stable" condition after surgery.

The two older children, believed to be the baby's brother and sister, were taken to hospital but both died within 90 minutes of the police call.

A 35-year-old woman, believed to be their mother, was under arrest in hospital where she was being treated for minor injuries.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said officers were called to the house at 10.30pm on Friday night.

“Police and London Ambulance attended and found three children suffering serious injuries, believed to be stab wounds,” he said.

“We believe we know the identity of the deceased. However, we await formal identification and confirmation that all family members have been informed.”

Post-mortem examinations on the two victims are expected to be carried out early next week.

The £300,000 two-bedroom property in Park Lane was taped off today as officers carried out an examination of the scene.
