MPS: HIDING OUR EXPENSES IS A ‘HUMAN RIGHT’
Matthew Elliott called MPs ‘out of touch’
By Jason Groves
MPS plan to use European human rights laws in a last-ditch bid to block the publication of their controversial expenses.
The idea was among the tactics discussed by members of the Commons administration committee at a meeting behind closed doors last week.
It comes amid fears that MPs could face a major backlash if plans to release full details of their housing expenses go ahead in the autumn.
Sources on the committee say they are furious about the handling of the affair by Commons authorities, who have agreed to publish MPs’ second home claims – as well as their addresses and phone numbers.
But freedom of information campaigners last night condemned the latest move in the three-year battle to expose MPs’ expenses.
Matthew Elliott, of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, said: “It just shows how completely out of touch they are with the public mood. The public want to see politics cleaned up and that has to start with the publication of these expenses in full.
“The best thing for the reputation of Parliament is to abandon these increasingly desperate bids and get all this information into the public domain as soon as possible. Only by doing that can we draw a line under this whole sorry episode.”
Last week the Commons agreed to release the expenses of 14 well known MPs who had been subject to requests under the Freedom of Information Act.
The revelations shed light on some of their huge perks. Items included a £6,000 bill to refit Gordon Brown’s kitchen and bedroom, £12,000 worth of repairs to the second home of former Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett and a £1,700 claim for window cleaning submitted by millionaire Labour MP Barbara Follett.
They also showed details of mortgages, council tax and utility bills. Almost no receipt is too small to be claimed – Mr Brown even received £15 for light bulbs.
Similar information is due to be released for all 646 MPs after they lost their bid to keep it secret.
But MPs believe they could bring a challenge against the release of some details under the European Convention on Human Rights, which is incorporated in British law under the Human Rights Act.
The move could delay publication by months or even years, and could result in a bizarre situation where British MPs are appealing to a European court to seek protection from freedom of information laws they passed themselves.
Tory MP Julian Lewis, whose call to block the release of MPs’ addresses has attracted the support of 100 MPs in two days, said it was “absolutely insane” to release details that could place MPs at risk of attack.
Dr Lewis said: “I have put my head above the parapet and I will challenge this right up to the highest court.
“It is nonsense to suggest this is some sort of cover-up. There are real security concerns. I have no problem with people looking at my expenses but releasing addresses is absolutely insane.”
Another MP said they were worried that publishing addresses would be a “burglar’s charter”, which could also leave them open to attack from disgruntled constituents and terrorists.
One member of the administration committee described the handling of the affair by the Commons authorities as “utterly cack-handed”.
Some campaigners say addresses should be made public following the case of former Tory MP Michael Trend who claimed thousands of pounds in expenses on a house he did not have.
MPs receive £90million a year in expenses. Claims include a £23,000-a-year second homes allowance, which can go on food, furniture, bills and mortgage payments.

Part of it was ' you cannot fool the people all of the time,' but it has become a very lucrative
business trying to,no wonder they are asking for a lump sum,no questions asked, tell them to get longer arms or shorter pockets and spend their own money we cannot afford them any longer

I am frankly appalled at the way our MPs spend our money. Why should they be allowed to claim expenses for such things as new kitchens, new bathrooms, lightbulbs, food, tv licence ..... and the list goes on. When I used to claim expenses at work the only thing I could claim for was my petrol. Just what do the MPs spend their wages on exactly. Why can't they be like the rest of us and spend their own money on these things. It seems that from the first day that they are elected by us, they are just concerned with feathering their own nests with our money, money that the ordinary person works extremely hard for.

THIS IS INTRIGUING

What can it be that they do not want us to find out.Can any court anywhere make a ruling that anyone can misuse public money for their own purpose and not let on to the people to whom the money belongs, what they have spent it on.? The excuse that their addresses would be known, anyone would only have to follow someone home to find that out. People where they live know where their homes are how long would it take someone to ask. They really must think we are thick and have wasted our money, again, by going to court for nothing,.Why was it allowed under the circumstances?
