The 31-year-old actor had proposed on two previous occasions but was rejected each time because Scarlett, 23, believed she was too young to marry. But he kept asking and, much to his delight, persistence paid off.

Ryan may not be so happy when he listens to the new album by his previous fiancée, singer and fellow Canadian Alanis Morissette.

The CD, Flavours Of Entanglement, is said to be full of angry songs dealing with her feelings at the end of their two-year engagement. Alanis, 33, says:

“I hit rock bottom due to personal unravelling. The record chronicles the rock bottom being hit.”

Scarlett meanwhile missed the triumphant Cannes film festival premiere of her latest film, Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona, after the French arm of Warner Brothers film studio bosses reportedly refused to pay for her over-the-top demands for hospitality.

She is said to have wanted her own make-up consultant at a cost of nearly £4,000 a day and to stay not in central Cannes like the film’s other stars, such as Penelope Cruz and Rebecca Hall, but at a hotel 30 miles away.
