The senator was taken ill yesterday

Sunday May 18,2008

By Brendan Abbott

THE last surviving brother from the Kennedy political dynasty is in hospital after suffering a stroke.

Edward Kennedy, 76, was taken ill yesterday at home in Massachusetts.

The US Democratic party senator, 76, has suffered back problems since a plane crash in 1964 in which the pilot and an aide were killed.

He had surgery in October on a partially blocked carotid artery in his neck. Doctors said a blocked carotid artery can lead to a stroke and death.

Kennedy was first elected senator for Massachusetts in 1962 and has won re-election seven times.

In 1969, his companion Mary Jo Kopechne died when their car crashed off a bridge.

His brothers President John and Bobby were assassinated. The eldest brother, wartime pilot Joseph Jr, was killed over southern England in 1944.
