MAYHEM EMBARASSED SMITH

Rangers fans were seen rioting in the streets

Sunday May 18,2008

Walter Smith has admitted he hopes he will never again see Rangers involved in the kind of scenes that soured the UEFA Cup Final in Manchester.

Supporters clashed with riot police after a city centre big screen failed and Smith admitted: “The events post-match put a bit of a dampener on everything and spoiled what had been a good day. I hope we never see it again.”

Smith knows it was a minority of so-called fans who caused mayhem but added: “I am very disappointed with what happened.

“As a squad we were a bit divorced from it. The sheer size of our support surprised me and it was fantastic. Everyone seemed to have had a good day and certainly the atmosphere inside the ground was something to savour.

“Although we lost and were disappointed the memory of that will always be with us.

“A lot of good things happened and hopefully for the majority that will be the memory. It was the minority who caused embarrassment and they are not representative.”
