Harry Redknapp: One of the greatest moments of his life

Sunday May 18,2008

By John Richardson

HARRY REDKNAPP escaped to his favourite Italian restaurant in Bournemouth last night with wife Sandra to celebrate Portsmouth’s FA Cup glory.

The Pompey boss, who had just experienced one of the greatest moments of his life, wanted to share it with the person who has kept him going through a traumatic season. Redknapp was arrested on an alleged football corruption charge – and last night admitted he owes a huge debt of gratitude to his wife.

After Portsmouth’s 1-0 success against Cardiff, he revealed: “I’m going to sneak away if I can, get my wife in the car and go to Bournemouth where we will have a meal with a good bottle of red wine. Check the two dogs are OK and then be ready to step on the bus for the celebrations tomorrow.

“It’s been a difficult year. My wife has kept me going, full stop. Everyone goes through tough times but – thanks to her – never did I think all this wasn’t worth it. All my family are here at Wembley. This is a great day, it’s a glory day. Is it my biggest achievement? A few years ago keeping Portsmouth up probably beats this but winning the FA Cup is magnificent.”

Redknapp confessed that he believed Portsmouth had come to the end of their FA Cup road when they were paired with Manchester United in the quarter-finals.

He added: “When we drew Manchester United I would be a liar if I thought then we were going to get to Wembley.

But we managed it and didn’t really get any of the credit we deserved for that performance at Old Trafford.

”This is also a great day for the fans, a day they will never forget.

Cardiff passed the ball well as I knew they would. I saw them absolutely murder Middlesbrough in the quarter-finals so I knew what to expect.

”There are no easy games. Brighton should have beaten Manchester United here at Wembley when Gordon Smith should have scored. ”But this is our day and one we have deserved.”

He saluted goal-scoring hero Kanu saying: “We got him on a free transfer from West Brom and everyone thought I was mad to sign him but he has been great for me.”

Redknapp admitted there were bad times immediately after his arrest but stated: “You have to go to work like anybody in the hard times.

I had to go in with a smile on my face. I couldn’t afford to feel sorry for myself.”

Cardiff boss, Dave Jones, admitted: “You have to allow us a bit of sorrow, allow us to wallow in our self-pity.

”My players gave it their best shot. I thought we matched Portsmouth in every department. We created half-chances and in the second half we pushed and had a go but Harry has come away with the Cup, it’s hard to swallow.

”There have been people who have said this season that we have under-achieved. How can they? We finished 12th in the Championship and have reached an FA Cup final.

”Now we have to use this as a springboard and move on.”
