The twisted remains of the £250,000 helicopter

Saturday May 17,2008

By Tony Brooks

The multi-millionaire boss of a hotel chain escaped with a minor arm injury when his helicopter crashed and burst into flames.

Stefan Sikorski, 50, is believed to have been familiarising himself with the new £250,000 machine when he got into difficulties.

It veered out of control and crash-landed with its rotor blades hitting the ground.

But Mr Sikorski, owner of the Lavender Hotel group, managed to scramble out of the cockpit before it caught fire.

His wife Sarah saw the crash on Thursday in the grounds of the Bolthole Country Park Hotel in Bury, Greater Manchester, where Mr Sikorski’s company has its headquarters.

Eyewitness Paul Thomas, 32, said: “The pilot took it up to about 10ft and it spun round. As it did so, it turned on its side and the blades hit the ground.

“Minutes later it was a ball of fire. He had a very lucky escape.”

An air ambulance was scrambled but was stood down when  it was realised no one was hurt.

A spokesman for Mr Sikorski, who is not connected to the US Sikorsky helicopter manufacturers, said: “He was shaken up but was soon back at his desk.”
