THE AIR I BREATHE

Story Image

This film is not as deep and meaningful as it thinks

Friday May 16,2008

By Allan Hunter

THIS is full of good intentions as it gathers together a classy cast to teach us some valuable lessons about the terrible ironies of life.

Any ensemble piece divided into chapters such as Happiness, Pleasure and Sorrow is already flirting with pretentiousness but Jieho Lee’s overblown feature embraces the concept wholeheartedly with clunky dialogue and po-faced solemnity.

The best section has Brendan Fraser as Pleasure, a gangster’s henchman who provides sanctuary for pop singer Trista (Sarah Michelle Gellar) as she tries to escape the clutches of ruthless mobster Fingers (Andy Garcia).

The worst has ER doctor, Love (Kevin Bacon) seeking the rare blood group that could save the woman he loves. None of it is as deep and meaningful as it thinks.

OUR VERDICT: 2/5
(Cert 15; 95 mins)
