FAREWELL MAULING FOR SVEN

ALVES: Hat-trick hero

Monday May 12,2008

By Graham Chase

Middlesbrough 8 Manchester City 1

SVEN-GORAN ERIKSSON was last night waiting for his Manchester City reign to end after suffering the heaviest defeat in his season in charge.

Eriksson has recognised the inevitability of his exit from Eastlands for more than a fortnight, and was due to speak to owner Thaksin Shinawatra to sort out his future last night.

Even considering City had captain Richard Dunne sent off after a quarter of an hour yesterday, their performance was abject and Eriksson was denied the chance to say his farewells to supporters due to trouble at the front of the away section.

City have been keen to stress that Eriksson will take charge of the tour of Thailand and Hong Kong, which starts on Wednesday, and a place in the UEFA Cup through the Fair Play league could be rubber-stamped on Tuesday.

But Eriksson said: “To live in insecurity is never good for anyone but I hope to be living in the secure very soon. In hours I hope. I expect to speak to people or they will speak to me.”

The incident that went a long way to settling matters came as Tuncay got in behind the visitors’ defence, the Turkish forward was clipped by Dunne and the City skipper was shown a straight red card. Stewart Downing converted from the spot.

Eight minutes before the interval, Fabio Rochemback’s square pass gave Afonso Alves the easiest of tap-ins. And just before the hour George Boateng’s cross from the right was flicked away only as far as Downing, who found the corner.

Two minutes later they had another through Alves and then Adam Johnson’s 25-yard effort deflected off Michael Ball and past Andreas Isaksson.

Rochemback, out of contract and set for talks with Sporting Lisbon, made it six with a free-kick and with five minutes left, substitute Jeremie Aliadiere fired into the far corner. Elano did hit the top corner from 25 yards, but in the final minute Aliadiere squared to Alves to make it eight.

Southgate said: “I had a quick chat with Sven and told him he can walk away with his head held high, and it’s perhaps a situation he’s better off out of. It’s a bizarre one.”
