WIDOW IN 'FAMILY' CALL WITH CAMERON

Story Image

David Cameron has spoken on the subject of family breakdowns

Thursday April 10,2008

The widow of murdered Garry Newlove has claimed that the breakdown of morals in Britain is so bad that children mete out violence like it is a video game.

Helen Newlove, whose husband was kicked to death by a gang of youths outside his Warrington home, said: "This is not a PlayStation game scenario. This is reality."

Mrs Newlove was sharing a platform with Tory leader David Cameron at a central London summit on Strengthening Families.

She rounded on the modern-day yob culture, hoodies who are allowed to glamorise violence while hiding their faces on television and the break-down of social values including lack of respect and families who do not do their job properly.

Mr Cameron emphasised the importance of improved policing and tougher sentences for violent offenders. He said there is also a need to address the causes of crime, including looking at families and schools.

He said: "We need to build stronger families and more responsible communities, so that kids grow up knowing the difference between right and wrong.

"Most important of all, parents need to take the responsibility of parenthood seriously.

"That is a harder and longer task than sorting out the criminal justice system. It is a task for a generation."

She feels that speaking out about the state of society and her own painful personal experience is now her only option to try and make a difference.

Mrs Newlove said: "I am now a single parent through no choice of my own and I have to fight for my children."

FAMILY VALUES

10.04.08, 9:44pm

the problem we have today is children do not value anything ,even the poorest kids have playstations ,tv's ,computors etc .the justice system is in tatters and kids dont respect there parents let alone the police ,the only way to go forward in this country is to vote out this lame government and introduce a law that makes the children or there parents pay for there crimes right down to the last penny including court cost police time etc,and for people that commit serious assalt or murder ,give them boot camp prisons ,not holiday camps .

FAMILY VALUES ETC.,

10.04.08, 5:51pm

Unfortunately previous Governments took away most of the family values by stopping the tawse in school, not allowing children to be disciplined and actually letting them off with just about everything. Now they are trying to back track. ABSO's do nothing. The belt never did me any harm [ even tho it was usually just for talking] lol , but I did behave myself.and I respected my parents, police etc., Parents and teachers need to discipline the children but laws now make that impossible.

FERAL YOUTH...

10.04.08, 5:19pm

A week and half ago, my friend was attacked, by her 14 year old son, in her own home. She was assaulted with an umbrella.... the 8 inch bruises she still has is testimony to how violent the attack was. She is a hard working mother and her husband of 30 years is a hard working father. Only yesterday did she resort to informing the police,.... Both parents have been begging the police and social workers for help.... the reply they got was that the boy is their own responsibility. Well that is all well and good, but the government made it illegal to enforce discipline..Now teachers, parents and police are unable to do little more then verbally chastise offensive behavior. The social workers even told my friend, that he was wrong to keep him in the house against his wishes.... so now, you cannot even "ground" your own children. Apparently it is an abuse of human rights.
Anyway, back to the issue, if one episode of Shameless can entice a family of supposed adults into costing the taxpayer £5 million to investigate a hoax abduction..... then hell yes, a violent video game can influence the mind of a teenage boy. Tagging does not work, a tag is a fashion acsessory. ASBO's do not work, they are a status symbol. The only thing that will work, is to re-introduce the "Short,Sharp Shock" that used to be borstal. Break up these gangs for three or months at a time. Build more young offenders institutes and don't be afraid to use them. Make our streets safe at night, stop the binge drinking, the knife crime, the gun crime and the complete disrespect for the law. There should be a fast track for this kind of behavior, not a long drawn out six month wait for a court hearing. As for human rights, surely a person should lose those, when they have abused those of someone else!

MRS NEWLOVE

Great credit to Mrs Newlove to bring back the calls for our streets to be cleared of thugs. Is David Cameron, just in it for the publicity.

TOO MUCH TALK AND NOT ENOUGH ACTION

10.04.08, 1:36pm

People in Great Britain are sick to death of all the talk from Labour and Conservatives on what they are going to doabout the breakdown of family life. That's all it is, just talk, nothing ever gets done,
This newspaper expressed concerns years ago about the violence in computer games, Mary Whitehouse was laughed at for saying that children can't see the difference between real and pretend, if they grow up with violence they will become violent.
The only way to stop it is to pay men a decent wage so that women can stay at home and look after their children. Being a Mum is the most important job in the world. From getting the children up and seeing them off to school, to being there when they get home, cooking them a healthy dinner and seeing that they are in bed early ready for school the next morning. Children have to be taught how to behave, have good manners, respect authority, learn standards of behaviou and morals. At the moment they are learning this from their friends on the streets, as their Mums are at work. They have to work as they need two wages to pay the bills. Children come home to an empty house, turn on their computer and TV, find themselves something to eat, Mum comes home later with a take away or something that she can put in the Microwave as she is too tired to cook.. Not half a dozen words are spoken it is so sad. What sort of life is that for thousands of familes
