MPS DEBATE 42-DAY TERROR DETENTION

Gordon Brown faces grilling over 42-day detention of terror suspects.

Tuesday April 1,2008

Plans to extend the time terror suspects can be held without charge to 42 days are facing their first Commons test amid disquiet on Labour's backbenches.

Many are believed to be deeply unhappy at the proposal but rebels are not expected to force a vote at this stage on the Counter Terrorism Bill.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown may face a media grilling over the controversial measure after a human rights watchdog warned it could launch a legal challenge.

Mr Brown will face the media for his regular Downing Street press conference just hours before the Second Reading debate begins on the package of anti-terror measures.

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith said at the weekend that she had been receiving a "good response" in discussions with Labour MPs about the Bill.

Mr Brown's predecessor Tony Blair suffered his first Commons defeat when MPs threw out his proposal for a 90-day limit in favour of a 28-day compromise.

The Equalities and Human Rights Commission said that it believed the new plans to extend the limit were discriminatory and in breach of the Magna Carta.

Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg indicated that though his party would fight "tooth and nail" to stop the extension, it would not oppose the overall package at this stage.

"We will seek to amend the Bill in committee before we agree to sacrifice the good to get rid of the ugly," Mr Clegg said.

Battle lines will be drawn when the Commons goes on to discuss the Bill in more detail, which is not expected to happen until after May 1's local elections.

RIDICULOUS

01.04.08, 11:39am

This ridiculous law is unjustifiable. If my MP votes for this Police State legislation he most certainly will not receive either my vote, or the votes of any member of my family. We have discussed this in depth and it is a sinister measure indeed by any measure. Going to have to check the voting list to see who favours such oppressive and abusive legislation.

MPS HELD FOR 42 DAYS WITHOUT CHARGE!

01.04.08, 11:18am

I am earnestly hoping to read the following news in very near future -

There are plans to extend the time the incompetent, corrupt, politicians of the House of Conmen, who terrorise the public, suspects are held without charge for 42 days for incompetence, stealth taxes, treachery, murders, looting the public, lining their pockets, etc.

We now virtually live in a police state and are ruled by mafia.

MP'S THERE FOR THE PEOPLE

01.04.08, 10:08am

Hi
everyone, why is it the MP'S we vote into parliment when they know what the goverment is trying to do is wrong, they will not vote against them , they were elected for these reasons to vote and speak for the people who put them there to begin with yet we have this major problem that they will abstain from voting AND THEY IS PRESSURE FOR THEM TO VOTE YES OR NO WHEN THEY KNOW WHAT THERE DOING IS WRONG
which lets the goverment get away with all these new laws that are being made legal and restricting the rights of the population they must vote for what they believe is right whether the goverment wins or loses that is DEMOCRACY
