BA’S TERMINAL 5 FIASCO PUTS THE WHOLE COUNTRY TO SHAME

Sunday March 30,2008

THE humiliating shambles that has engulfed the opening of the new terminal at Heathrow has turned from a local setback into a national catastrophe.

Before it opened last week British Airways, which has the exclusive use of Terminal 5, had high expectations.

The gleaming new building took 20 years to plan, £4.3billion to build and was packed with the latest technology. T5, they said, would be an “airport experience unlike any other in the world”.

How right they were. From the moment the doors opened on Thursday the flagship project turned into a shambles.

Scores of flights were cancelled and thousands of passengers were left to queue for hours.

Doors couldn’t be unlocked, the lifts were jammed, the computer system froze and the baggage handlers weren’t properly trained. It was the same story the next day and the day after that.

BA management has a lot to answer for. Heathrow is Britain’s front window; it is the first place millions of visitors here ever see.

Why did BA route so many flights through T5 on day one?

There were bound to be teething problems.

But this debacle has gone on too long and has damaged more than just BA.

ONE HAS TO ASK?

How this gragantuan cockup will be reflected in the BA Directors end of year bonuses?
I suspect equally gigantic rewards will be enjoyed by all!

AND THEY WANTED TO FINGERPRINT EVERYONE TOO!

31.03.08, 4:35pm

And the BAA wanted to fingerprint us all too on arrival? Securely? Doubtless by now most of those 'prints would have been indexed on You Tube. Hmmm. maybe they should rename T5 as 'Welcome To You Tubes'?

TERMINAL FIASCO NUMBER 5

30.03.08, 3:10pm

i had no expectations of this event as BA and Heathrow are in my view symptomatic of the this country and the legacy of previous governments. Like a spoilt only child, it's been given everything it wants and with no one to compete with it provides the very worst service to thousands of customers.

I never intend using this airport until it is run for the convenience of the passengers who can choose to fly with who they like.

TERMINAL 5

30.03.08, 2:47pm

Why should we be surprised? Remember the millenium dome fiasco or the bridge we couldn't walk across because it wobbled. Why do we stand for incompetance like this. The very senior B A official who keeps saying sorry should have the decency to resign. Will he ? IIthink not and this government are too dumb to sack him.

BA TERMINAL

30.03.08, 1:54pm

Once again we have shown just how uneducated the so called cream of the BA are. Cutting costs no doubt has caused the debacle and the people who have caused it should be sacked. Unfortunately we all know that being sacked when you are carrying the title Managing Director means a golden goodbye moneywise.
