SALMOND SLAMMED FOR REFERENDUM 'U-TURN'

Salmond: Slammed for U-turn

Thursday March 27,2008

By Paul Gilbride

SCOTLAND could become independent "by the back door" it was claimed yesterday as the SNP said that voters may now get a three-way referendum.

Pro-Union parties criticised Alex Salmond after he suggested the country’s future could be decided by a vote in which the electorate listed their preferences in order.

Such a single transferable voting system would split the vote three ways and could see Scotland leaving the United Kingdom on a minority vote.

Tory leader Annabel Goldie dismissed the First Minister’s call as "tripe". "You do not decide the destiny of a country on the basis of the second-best or least-worst option," she said.

"This is tripe – the wild words of a panicking man.

"Alex Salmond is clutching at straws for his minority whim."

Labour leader Wendy Alexander said: "Once again it demonstrates the SNP’s back-of-an-envelope approach to Scotland’s future.

"Alex Salmond must be delusional if he thinks that Scotland will be happy to accept independence by the back door." The SNP wants a referendum in 2010 on whether Scotland should become independent, but at present lacks majority support to get this through Holyrood.

Mr Salmond challenged opposition parties to come up with an alternative to independence that could be put to the public in the referendum.

The challenge came when he launched the latest stage of the Scottish Government’s National Conversation on the country’s constitutional future.

A separate commission, chaired by Sir Kenneth Calman, is reviewing the powers of the Scottish Parliament ten years on from devolution, with the involvement of Labour, the Lib Dems and the Tories – but independence has been excluded from its deliberations. Mr Salmond yesterday argued there was now consensus that the present constitutional framework did not give Scotland the opportunities it needed to succeed.

He said he was "relaxed" about the commission set up by the other parties. But he said: "I have already said that as First Minister I am happy to test support for enhanced devolution, along with support for independence for Scotland.

"And I say to those who oppose the restoration of Scottish independence that just as I respect absolutely their right to hold that view, so in return I feel able to require of them a clear alternative which can be put onto a ballot paper and held up to public scrutiny and be available for a decision by the Scottish people."

Scotland Office Minister David Cairns later claimed the preference voting move was a "humiliating" U-turn by Mr Salmond. "He is running scared of voters," said Mr Cairns. "What has happened to his Braveheart stance?"

But a spokesman for Mr Salmond said he was breaking no new ground.

"In all the many years the SNP have talked about a constitutional multi-option referendum it has always been on the basis of a preferential voting system," he said.

SALMOND SLAMMED? FOR WHAT? WHY? FOR LISTENING TO THE PEOPLE?

27.03.08, 12:54pm

Good for Alex Salmond, at least Alex has the courage to put his policies to the Scottish people in a referendum. Alex is a breath of fresh air and I am sure he will make quite sure that the Scottish people get exactly what they want.

Just contrast Alex’s principled position to Brown’s devious, high-handed and dictatorial refusal to give the British people a democratic vote on the dishonest EU Con-Treaty.

I am not Scottish but I know what sort of politician I prefer to represent me, and it is not a totalitarian autocrat like Brown who is not the slightest bit interested in hearing anyone’s views except his own.

SALMOND SLAMMED

There is no U turn, the ball is firmly in the unionists court.
They have no way of denying the Scottish people a referendum thanks to Mr Salmonds stance!
They have joined together as unlikely bed fellows, to try and stop the SNP.
All in Scotland know that they have been told what to say and what to discuss in their commission/review/ revue! by their London masters.
More powers for Scotland , if it is the settled will of the sovreign people of Scotland.
Independence if it is the settled will of the Scottish people.
It is called democracy , sme politicians might have to look up the meaning of that long forgotten word!
A refendum would establish the settled will of the sovreign people of Scotland not some party in England which decides for us!
Ask the question , or are you so terrified of the answer ,so terrified of the settled will of the Scottish people that you will deny them that on the grounds that you as unionists know best?
Stop telling us that the election in May asked the question ,it diid NOT.
Do not judge that election as a means of dismissing the people.
There are many , who did not necessarily vote SNP , but who still believe in INDEPENDENCE.
