ARCHBISHOP WARNS ON 'GREEDY' STATES

Dr Rowan Williams says life's 'luxuries' can't be sustained

Sunday March 23,2008

The Archbishop of Canterbury has used his Easter Sunday sermon to warn against nations' greed for oil, power and territory.

Dr Rowan Williams said the "comforts and luxuries" we take for granted could not be sustained for ever and prophesied that civilisation would collapse one day.

We face a culture in which thoughts of death are "too painful to manage", he told worshippers at Canterbury Cathedral.

Dr Williams lightened the sermon's sombre tone by reminding people of Christianity's Easter message that death will be overcome.

But he said death was the end "in an important sense" and urged Christians to prepare for it by constantly striving to let go of "selfish, controlling, greedy habits".

The Archbishop went on: "We face a culture in which the thought of death is too painful to manage.

"Individuals live in anxious and acquisitive ways, seizing what they can to provide a security that is bound to dissolve, because they are going to die.

"Societies or nations do the same. Whether it is the individual grabbing the things of this world in just the repetitive, frustrating sameness that we have seen to be already in fact the mark of an inner deadness, or the greed of societies that assume there will always be enough to meet their desires - enough oil, enough power, enough territory - the same fantasy is at work.

"We shan't really die. We as individuals can't contemplate an end to our acquiring, and we as a culture can't imagine that this civilisation, like all others, will collapse and that what we take for granted about our comforts and luxuries simply can't be sustained indefinitely.

"To all this, the Church says, sombrely, don't be deceived: night must fall."

THE ABC WOULD HAVE MORE CREDIBILITY ON ACQUISITIVENESS IF HE QUIT LAMBETH PALACE TO RESIDE IN A LESS EXPENSIVE RESIDENCE

24.03.08, 2:47pm

This man is noted for his controversial statements, not the least of them criticism of American foreign policy. Seems cleaning up his own bailiwick, his own back yard, doesn't interest him, the subject would not attract the same media attention.

His much publicized attempt with the controversial suggestion that Britain should adopt sharia law, rather than Islamics obeying common law, got him into hot water. It also had an impact on what he had to say about American policies at home and abroad. His credibility went out the door. Here we follow one law, we are one nation although multi-cultured, and those invading our shores do not change the way of things, nor do the Muslims. You break the law here and you go to jail. You don't get off the hook by paying your victims the going rate as with sharia law. And the American system of jurisprudence is founded on that of Britain and is the best in the world because of it.

Now we Americans (I'm English too in case someone thinks I should butt out) are acquisitive indeed. And yes, we use 50% of the world's oil. But the Arabs are no slouches where money-grabbing is concerned. The price of oil is at an all time high. Far from condemning us greedy westerners in a funk in their luxurious palaces, the Arabs are rubbing their greedy palms, delighted that they have the monopoly on the one thing that the world needs and seeks to acquire in every greater quantity. And speaking of palaces ...

All that space in Lambeth Palace costs a heck of a lot of British sterling to heat. It needs a lot of oil to keep it warm. Unlike many unfortunate Britons, the ACB has no problem getting that expense covered. If he is for real, he should ditch the palace and live in a more humble residence. Leave the palaces to the acquisitive Arabs. Then perhaps the ACB will get a reality check about how the average world citizen lives, really.

The Church with all its denominations is one of the wealthiest and most acquisitive in existence and has been for hundreds of years. The Catholic portfolio would make any Wall Street broker drool.

The ACB should practice what he preaches. Or keep his mouth shut about the mote in others' eyes when there is a huge beam in his and the Church in general. He is not in a position to judge others, much less the American foreign policy, and should keep his ecclesiastical nose out of politics. In the United States there is a strict separation of church and states, woe be to him who crosses it. Maybe the Church of England should take a leaf out of our book.

Maybe the archbishop should look at his own life and lifestyle.
