QUEEN 'NOT CONSULTED' ON OATH PLAN

The Queen: 'Not consulted'

Sunday March 16,2008

The Queen was not consulted over controversial proposals for young school-leavers to swear a patriotic oath, Buckingham Palace has made clear.

Coming-of-age ceremonies were among ideas suggested by former Attorney General Lord Goldsmith in a review of citizenship commissioned by Gordon Brown.

They would be based on similar events for foreign nationals adopting British nationality which require a public declaration of allegiance to the monarch and a pledge of commitment to the UK.

In an unusual intervention, a royal spokesman told the Mail on Sunday newspaper: "What we would like to say is that Buckingham Palace was not consulted with regard to the Goldsmith review."

Lord Janvrin, the Queen's former private secretary and now a Permanent Lord-in-Waiting in the Royal Household, was listed by Lord Goldsmith as a contributor to his report.

However, his involvement did not extend beyond a general conversation about the Royal Family and was not made as an official representation, a Palace source told the newspaper.

A spokesman for the review insisted no decision would be taken on going ahead with the plan without the Palace being consulted.

Immigrants taking part in citizenship ceremonies swear an oath of allegiance, or make a non-religious affirmation. They also make a separate pledge of commitment to the UK.

The idea of extending it to children was ridiculed by some teachers' leaders, ethnic minority groups and by devolved areas of the UK.

Other proposals for creating a "sense of shared belonging" in Britain included: a new British national day; rewarding community work with a council tax or university fees discount or "points" towards gaining citizenship; compulsory citizenship lessons at primary school; and loans to help pay for English lessons.

FIRST WE HAVE THE DE BANNER HEADLINES "PHILIP AND THE NAZIS" AND NOW THE QUEEN IS BEING SHUNTED ASIDE OVER A NEW "OATH OF ALLEGIANCE," COMES NOW A NEW ANTHEM "THE FATHERLAND"?

16.03.08, 9:09pm

It is my understanding that for centuries, members of both Houses of Parliament have been required to take an oath, swearing to 'bear true allegiance' to the Queen and her successors. It is tradition. British tradition.

This new pledge of commitment to the country or a statement on the rights and responsibilities of citizens is being condemnded by critics as being more appropriate for a republic, such as France or America, than a monarchy. I agree it bears no reference to a monarchy. However, I don't see how it can be likened to the Pledge of Allegiance of America.: I Pledge Allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, ...." The two pledges are distinct.

There is a problem with it for me as it refers to citizens. Britain doesn't have "citizens" but rather "subjects of a kingdom." I know this from the fact that Britain does not recognize my U.S. citizenship (I have dual citizenship, I am English/naturalized American), and for that very reason - you cannot renounce your status as a subject. Nor would I want to. Canada on the otherhand demands that new citizens renounce all others.

It would seem odd to me that any British Government discussion of an oath of allegiance and with the stated purpose of being in the interests of "Britishness" would exclude the Queen's input. Since when has the Moncarchy been regarded as separate and apart? But far from reading anything sinister into this, or squawking about it, I see it as another instance of downright inefficiency in George Brown's cabinet. Another failure to do ....

For heaven's sake! Are we next going to see the Queen banished to the Tower of London? It might be a good idea to install George Brown there. He is a disaster!!!!!!

SACK BROWN!

16.03.08, 3:52pm

The queen has the constitutional power to sack any Prime Minister. If she does, its up to the party with the largest majority to offer here a candidate, or she is entitled to ask any MP of that party to form a government. This is the law. However, its doubtful if our 83 year old queen would do so. She has the absolute veto of all acts of Parliament , she can refuse to assent or sign and seal them, without which they cannot become law. No monarch since Queen Victoria has done so, a) because the had no need to, and b) no other government has abused their position until labour got in. The Queen could, or rather should tell Gordon Brown that if he does not give her people a referendum on the EU treaty, that a) she will not sign it and b) she will sack him. But no she won't, the Royal family kept on by us as a safeguard against the likes of new labour, prefer an easy rise and the gravy train rather than protect the people. Let's have a revolution, a new American style constitution that safeguards the peoples rights and restitricts the government and has penalties if they break the constituional law. Then truly the people will be sovereign.

MY LOYALTY

16.03.08, 1:24pm

We all know how Gordon Brown uses "stealth techniques" to achieve his hidden agenda.

Everything the traitor Gordon Brown does is moving us yet one more step further to subservience to the European Super State and loss of our sovereignty. We all know that Gordon Brown is dreaming of turning us into the “European Banana Republic of the Once Great Britain”.

I am glad the Queen is concerned.

My loyalty is to Great Britain and the Queen.

We must stop Brown before it is too late.

Off with his head.

ALLIEGANCE SHOULD BE SWORN THE THE COUNTRY BUT ........

16.03.08, 12:40pm

Alliegance should be sworn the the country but not neccessarily the Queen(Monarchy). Many Britons love their country without being royalists so to me this is wrong and will encourage resentment towards the royal family. Britain is a democracy (or so we are led to believe) so it should be a matter of choice.

Methinks that Gordon Brown ( just like his predecessor Tony Bliar ) has No regard whatsoever for the Royals.

His arrogance beggars belief !
