BRITISH SURGEONS ‘COULD SAVE SWAYZE’

Story Image

Swayze is dying from pancreatic cancer

Sunday March 16,2008

By Lucy Johnston

British surgeons have offered to help save the life of Hollywood heartthrob Patrick Swayze, who is dying from cancer of the pancreas.

The London team say they can now help people in the advanced stage of the disease. Without surgery victims have only a five per cent chance of surviving five years.

Kito Fusai, the surgeon heading the team at the Royal Free Hospital in London, said: “If he [Swayze] came over here we would operate on him. It would be a pleasure.”

The new technique, expected to save hundreds of lives in Britain every year, was performed for the first time in December.

It involves removing part of the portal vein that sits behind the pancreas and replacing it with part of the jugular vein from the patient’s neck.

Pancreas tumours frequently spread to the portal vein which runs behind the pancreas and touches it. Until now surgeons did not have the skills to perform this highly intricate operation.

At present only 700 of the 7,500 people a year in Britain who develop pancreatic cancer undergo surgery. This is because it has been virtually impossible to operate on the cancer if it has spread.

For many, like 55-year-old Swayze, thought to have got cancer due to his 60-a-day smoking habit, the only alternative to surgery is chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Mr Fusai, who carried out the procedure with fellow surgeon Dinesh Sharma, is excited by the possibilities the treatment now offers.

He said: “This now gives us more options to help patients suffering from this dreadful cancer which has just about the worst survival rates of all cancers.”

The 10-hour operation requires the expertise of vascular surgeons who remove part of the jugular vein so it can replace the cancerous portal vein.

The first patient to be operated on in this way by the Royal Free team, a woman in her 50s from London, is recovering well after surgery.

More similar operations are planned soon.

NEW OPERATION?????

17.03.08, 1:06am

Surgeons in the United States, Japan, Italy and Germany have been performing sucessful portal vein resection for pancreas cancer for a number of years and do so with increasing frequency. Data fully supports the safety of that operation in major centers for pancreatic surgery by experienced surgeons. HOe can this possibly be reported as "a new operation?"

GORDON BENNET

This is someone's life that is on the line here, so i feel that your comment is a very selfish one.

What you are saying is the same argument as the so called 'post code lottery'. If you live in a certain area you cannot have certain operations. As he does not live in Britain, he should not be given the chance to live?

I doubt if he would be trying to get the operation on the NHS, so would not be using any money that you had contributed so what is the problem.

A life is a life, whether you live in UK, USA or Timbuktu. A person in Britain is not more worthy to live than a person in any other place and I am so glad that the surgeons are not so narrow minded as to believe that you should only stay alive if you live at an 'acceptable address'. Instead they are offering to use their skills to save lives - regardless, and for this should be commended for having good hearts.

YES IF IT WILL WORK GO FOR IT....

16.03.08, 1:54pm

What chances does he have? The survival rate for this cancer is not very good so if British Doctors have a chance to save him let them try not only because he is a movie star but he is a human being fighting for his life. If someone from London needed help and could get it from the United States I would hope they could get help from us. Anything, Anywhere we must all survive if there's a chance at all. If they don't try and soon, it may be too late.

HOLD ON

I don't believe that British surgeons are more capable than American suregeons.
Unless he want's free treatment which is always available on the International Health Service that the NHS has become.

IF IT WORKS, WHY NOT?

I hope it does work and he should take them up on their offer if it proves it will. It's nice to see some global team work. British doctors helping American patients sounds good to me.
