Gordon Brown with Chancellor Alistair Darling yesterday

Thursday March 13,2008

By Gabriel Milland Political Correspondent

GORDON Brown and Alistair Darling were condemned by pensioner groups yesterday after measures supposed to help them were branded a “con”.

Mr Darling used his Budget to fanfare plans to raise the annual winter fuel allowance for over 60s from £200 to £250.
For those aged 80 and above the increase will be an extra £100 on the current £300.

But critics pointed out that the increase is set to last for just one year – and that it was being funded by another Labour tax raid on people currently saving for retirement.

The Government plans to slash its contribution to the State Second Pension by £450million a year, effecting anyone contributing to a personal pension fund.

Frank Cooper, president of the National Pensioners’ Convention, said: “This small increase is unlikely to stop the rising scale of fuel poverty among older people or end the scandalous number of winter deaths among the over 60s.

The decision not to give an across-the-board rise of £100 to all pensioners is also likely to backfire.

“No one seriously believes that a 79-year-old’s fuel bill is any less than that of an 80-year-old and it’s about time all pensioner households were getting a £400 winter fuel allowance.”

He added: “Pensioners are furious with the Government’s refusal to improve the state pension.

Are YOU disgusted with Labour's arrogance? Were the measures the Government put in place "a con?"

ORWELL

25.03.08, 9:17pm

animal farm was a critique of socialism
1984 was a critique of totalitarianism (which occurs in both left and right politics at the extremes).

the fact that you, btob, unquestioningly believe political propoganda such as this, and i say propaganda because these 'stories' never back up their claims properly with facts, but rely on rhetoric, aspersions and willful misrepresentation of people's words, demonstrates that orwell's points are truly lost on you.

how can you believe in the 'truth' of a paper that had to aplogise last week for printing unfounded stories?

it is a stunning lack of independent thought on your part.

LABOURS ARROGANCE

21.03.08, 5:09pm

I would rather be governed by genghis Khan than this lot. they have trampled the honest , decent, indigenous population of this country into the mire. If you are not an asylum seeker, eastern european migrant, or someone who is covered by human rights legislation then you are cannon fodder. Brown and co should be ashamed of themselves.

SINCE WE’RE ON THE THREAD OF ORWELL…

21.03.08, 11:10am

On George Orwell – a few facts for the “O'Brians” of the world!!!
(O'Brian is the one who sends people to room 101 whilst quaffing his expensive wine.)

The novel “1984” was written in 1948.
It was written by Eric Blair (pseudonym George Orwell)
Orwell = a Suffolk river; George = quintessentially *English*
Orwell regarded himself as an Englishman.
1984 was a direct attack on left wing politics
The media in “1984” is completely controlled by the govt and used as an instrument of suppression.
Orwell saw socialism as a direct route to totalitarianism
Orwell regarded socialism as the direct enemy of individualism.

Try reading Animal Farm – no media there – just corrupt ‘socialist’ leaders snuffling in the trough while they sell off (literally) their comrades for glue!

As I said on a post a while back – blaming the Daily Express or the media for this lousy govt is akin to blaming a child for having unruly parents.

Our current govt may have had good intentions in 1997 (briefly, fleetingly) but those good intentions caved in within months.

Thankfully, whether people have read George Orwell's novels or not, the majority of the electorate recognise the levels of corruption radiating from Westminster.

And trying to discredit posts because of typing errors is pretty Orwellian in itself!!

10 out of 10 for irony though; superb!!!

ORWELL

20.03.08, 7:49pm

in 1984 was all about how easily people could be manipulated by media into hating or loving any particular group or country depending on the circumstances.

the fact that the express uses the same tactics to stir anti-muslim and anti-immigration feeling is lost on you so-called orwell scholars who can't even spell.
