DIANA DRIVER TOOK 'TOO MANY RISKS'

Story Image

Romuald Rat submitted evidence to the Diana, Princess of Wales inquest

Tuesday March 11,2008

Driver Henri Paul took "too many risks" while driving Diana, Princess of Wales, on the fatal journey in which she was killed, her inquest has heard.

Paparazzo Romuald Rat claimed the Mercedes carrying Diana, "took off, like shot off", once it hit the Champs Elysee in a bid to lose the chasing pack of paparazzi.

Minutes later in the early hours of 31 August 1997, the car crashed in the Alma Tunnel in Paris, killing Diana, her lover Dodi Fayed and Mr Paul, the head of security at the Paris Ritz Hotel.

In a police statement Mr Rat, who had been following Diana all day and taking shots, said: "I did not understand why the Mercedes suddenly drove so quickly since every had gone so well during the day and a normal chauffeur knows that is not the way that you shake someone off. He took too many risks."

Police statements from several paparazzi who were on the scene that night are being read to the jury as they refuse to appear, either by videolink from Paris or in person at the London inquest.

Mr Paul had repeatedly came out of the back of the Ritz, before the couple departed, to talk to the photographers and "broadly speaking he was mocking us", Mr Rat claimed.

At one point Mr Rat recalls that one of the photographers had claimed that Mr Paul, who was later found to be over the drink-drive limit, said: "I think he has been drinking."

Robert Weekes, for Henri Paul's parents, noted: "There is no suggestion that Mr Paul's voice was slurred, that he was unsteady on his feet or that his eyes were glazed. On the basis of Mr Rat's statement you would not be able to conclude that Henri Paul was drunk."

Mr Rat was among seven photographers arrested at the scene of the crash. He admits to being a "leading pursuer" as the couple left the Ritz Hotel and probably one of the first on the scene.

But several inconsistencies, including a "down right lie" are obvious from his statements, according to Tom de la Mare, for the Ritz Hotel.

THE WHITE FIAT - TYLER'S MUM

WHITE FIAT

12.03.08, 9:05am

There are indications that the Mercedes was struck on the back wheel arch by a White Fiat.
This is the spot that police are trained to use to intercept a car.

The Fiat was seen driving crab like from the tunnel indicating severe damage yet the Fiat has never been found. This would suggest that nearby it had a secure garage where it was later dismantled

Hi Tyler's Mum - long time no see, and hope you're keeping well.

About the white Fiat - when you say "indications" (that Diana's Merc was struck on the back wheel arch), what are these indications, and who detected them?? If the statement was intended to be cryptic, I understand, but it would be great if you could elaborate a little!

Also, who was it that actually saw this car, (identified it as a white Fiat, etc), and then noticed it driving "crab-like"? And what is it that makes you (or anyone else) think that this may be the testimony of a reliable witness? I am in no way being a smart-alec here, I'm just genuinely interested!

Finally, if the "white Fiat" was never found, isn't it most probable that it's because it simply didn't exist?? I don't understand why you believe in the rather elaborate "dismantling in a garage" theory??

Take care.

ACCIDENT

12.03.08, 10:48am

After hundreds of hours and millions of £'s this inquest will say - accidental death caused by an incompetant, drunk French driver. What a waste of time and money when we all know the result is a foregone conclusion.

DIANA, AND THE CONSPIRACY THAT NEVER WAS!

No intrigue. Simply foolish action.

Couldn't agree more!

This was no conspiracy - no set-up!

Simply, Henri Paul was driving too fast through a narrow tunnel, under the influence of alcohol, egged on by Dodi Fayed, who, was trying impress Diana with how he could dodge the Paparazzi!

CCTV of the moments before they left the Ritz show Diana looking pensive: probably, she knew she was taking a safety risk by not sticking to her trained, royal drivers (although why she didn't wear her seatbelt is anybody's guess!). I'm thinking maybe Diana thought she would risk it just this once and let Dodi be the "big man", but next time, she would say "no". Unfortunately though, as we all know, there wouldn't be any "next time"!

It's understandable that people would want to see a conspiracy in this. Many people can't accept that Diana, larger than life, could die in such an ordinary way! And certainly, for Mohammed Al Fayed, the motivation for pushing for a "conspiracy" is not wanting his family lumped for all time with the responsibility of killing the princess! Truth is though, Diana really DID die in a car crash - just like Princess Grace of Monaco, and just like thousands of poor souls all over the world every day! No conspiracy, no cover-up. Just a normal, vulnerable woman, who made an error in judgement for the sake of finding romantic happiness!

MEN SEEN LEAVING IN DARK CAR .

11.03.08, 11:23pm

INTRIGUE? THE DARK CAR ON THE RIGHT? PLEASE!
11.03.08, 10:15pm

This trip already had a recipe for disaster without any other props. This is not a straight arrow tunnel, it turns suddenly. I've been in it. To drive a car at 100 m.p.h. was not only grossly over the speed limit there but grossly negligent. In addition, Henry Paul is reported to have run all the red lights from the Place de la Concorde into this tunnel. A preview of what was to come?

No intrigue. Simply foolish action.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Well Lord Stevens said 45 to 55 mph. The French Police lied about the "needleslap" evidence of 120 mph...so you are wrong I'm afraid.

And as for the Dark Peugeot on the right ....then I am not the only one to think its strange. ...and who IS leaving the scene ?

Witness 'saw two men leave scene of Diana crash'

.A witness to the aftermath of the crash that killed Diana, Princess of Wales, today described seeing two men leave the scene of the accident.
In a statement, Amel Samer said she had watched the pair walk away from a group of photographers, get into a vehicle and disappear.

The men had been among around 10 people standing around the wreckage of the princess's Mercedes in the Pont d'Alma road tunnel in Paris.

However, Ms Samer later failed to identify either of the two figures from police mugshots of the paparazzi known to have been at the scene.

"After passing the Alma bridge, I went into the underpass ... I passed a stationary car on the other side of the road," Ms Samer's statement, heard at the inquest into the deaths of the princess and Dodi Fayed, said.

"I was puzzled by this, as it was not a place that you would normally park a car."

She noticed the two men and their dark coloured vehicle after coming across the crashed Mercedes and stopping to call the emergency services.

"It was when I was looking behind, when I was on the phone, that I noticed two men leaving the arc formed by the photographers to head towards the black car that I mentioned," she said.

The witness went on to describe the two men, saying one was aged between 30 and 40, of average build with short brown hair and possibly wearing a pink shirt. He was not carrying a camera.

The other, who had a camera with a long lens, was described as European, small and very thin, with short brown hair and glasses.

"I saw them get into the car and disappear in it," Ms Samer's statement added.

Earlier today, the jury heard how Grigori Rassinier, a French motorist who was travelling in the opposite direction of the crash, had seen Diana trapped in her vehicle. Mr Rassinier said he saw the Mercedes "juddering" in the immediate aftermath of the accident.

"The interior light of the crashed car was on. As a result I could see two heads in the back of the car," Mr Rassinier's statement said. "I noticed that the rear right hand passenger was a woman. She had her hand raised and was crushed against the front seat."

So they were not paperazzi, ... WHO ARE THESE MEN ? THEY SAW EVERYTHING....

A good Police Photo enharnser could pick out these people... where are the mug shots ?

Give up please! The fault was the drivers', and Dodi Fayed's undoubtedly because of his track record for telling his drivers to "step on it!" (He once paid a chauffeur $100 to drive over 100 m.p.h. on the 405 Freeway in Los Angeles - to get him to the airport on time. It has a speed limit of from 55 m.p.h. so the rest of the drivers be damned. He was a madman!). Diana didn't use her usual good sense either when she rode in the car without her seat belt fastened.

It was guaranteed that they would attract hordes of paparazzi because anyone of note is not in Paris in August. It is too hot and humid. It was a given that they would attract such attention. Diana and her Bad judgment. Diana and her much-talked-about lover on the Champs Elysée in that deserted city on a Saturday night would have attracted the mesmerized attention of anyone that night.

No intrigue. Simply foolish action.
