QUEEN URGES ACTION ON ENVIRONMENT

Story Image

The Queen's Commonwealth Day message will focus on climate change

Monday March 10,2008

The Queen is to call for the world to work together to help protect the environment.

In her annual Commonwealth Day message, she will say that the impact of climate change is often worst for those countries who pollute the least.

And she will suggest that the developed world should work with communities that are most affected to bring about lasting change.

"Happily, this approach has always been a strength of the Commonwealth, and awareness of environmental issues is now widespread, with a determination that future generations should enjoy clean air, sufficient fresh water and energy without risking damage to the planet," the Queen will say.

In her message for 2008, the Queen will refer to last year's meeting of Commonwealth heads of government on the edge of Lake Victoria in Uganda where they agreed to an action plan for tackling climate change.

The Queen will say: "It was an appropriate place to do so: from there, the waters of the River Nile begin a three-month journey to the Mediterranean.

"The Nile, throughout history, has served humankind in many ways. But for all its impressive size and importance, this river is a fragile eco-system; and its vulnerability grows with the number of people dependent upon it, so that a single incident of pollution upstream may affect the lives of countless numbers downstream.

"The example of the Nile illustrates many of the challenges facing the global environment as a whole which cannot alone sustain our lives as once it did. The competition for fresh water by a growing population is itself becoming a source of potential conflict."

She will remind the Commonwealth that attitudes to the environment in their own country may have consequences for people on every continent and for every ocean and sea.

The Queen will praise young people's energy and awareness in confronting climate change. She will ask for them to be supported and for the Commonwealth, governments, businesses, communities and individuals to "match words and good intentions with deeds".

WITH ALL DUE RESPECT MAM, YOU SHOULD URGE SHOULD ACTION CLOSER TO HOME - WITH YOUR SHOOTING PARTIES, THAT IS.

11.03.08, 5:25am

You could begin protecting the environment around Balmoral for starters. The wanton killing of wildlife for the amusement of your guests is outrageous. It might interest you to know that along the Nile there are game reserves protected by dedicated rangers intent on preserving the wildlife there. Just the opposite of Balmoral. You should be familiar with that story.

From what I have read, you are quite a hand at wringing the necks of the hapless victims of your shooting party whose shooting accuracy didn't ensure that they were killed outright. And William and Harry were blooded during these shooting parties were they not?

You folks live on another planet it would seem. I haven't forgotten the trip to India by Philip Mountbatten who went on a tiger shoot with the Rajah - and all of it while a leading spokesman for the International Wildlife Association!

What hypocrisy!

A TAXING PROBLEM

10.03.08, 7:35pm

this global warming scare story has been going around for quite a few years now and the only solutions offered by anyone seems to be raising taxes.this is just another scam to relieve us of some more money and theres going to be no escape from this.the tories have their own ideas on "green taxes" likewise the lib/dems and as we all know, to our cost, any excuse to raise more tax will do labour.in the seventies i remember the big ecological disaster story was the rapidly approaching ice age and europe would be buried under glaciers miles deep ,all the talking heads agreed ,a new ice age could be upon us ,wildlife would be extinct, civilisation itself was under threat ,hundreds of millions of refugees from the northern hemisphere, war, pestilance, famine and etc sound familiar?

WHO KNOWS WHAT DAMAGE IT DOES

10.03.08, 6:09pm

But one thing is certain sure,no matter what the limitations placed on Britain, the Chinese and Indian industry will negate them.
And why not,Britain belched out filth to build the Empire, now it's their turn.
The sanctimonious labour party have a fleet of gas guzzling limousines, ferrying the fat, waste of space labour ministers around.
They then penalise the rest of us,a pox on all of them.
One thing is certain, the scotch robber sees it as an opportunity to put his thieving hands in English pockets once more.

10.03.08, 1:23pm

The jury is stioll out about global warming, only a few weeks it was reported that we had globally had the coldest winter and biggest snow falls for over 40 years, oh yes and the mysteriously dissapperaing ice caps have re-appeared. We are getting spun a line here, and now the Queen is getting involved, wonder what her carbon foot print is like???? cant help but think that the most horriblus Anus around at the moment is currently residing in number 10 Downing street, or one of his other grace and favor establishments.
