ARE COUNCILS RUBBISH AT EMPTYING BINS?

Story Image

Councils are refusing to collect open bins

Saturday March 8,2008

BARMY new waste collection rules mean that councils across Britain are now refusing to empty bins altogether – unless the lid is shut.

One in three local authorities has ordered collectors not to touch any open bin, even if the lid is only slightly lifted.

It is the latest “ridiculous” edict to hit householders already fuming about fortnightly collections and confusing advice about recycling.

The Local Government Association yesterday revealed that 120 of the 376 councils that collect waste in England and Wales now operate the “closed lid” policy.

Will this move lead to more fly-tipping?

Will our streets now become a haven for rats and foxes?

Are you confused about what you are supposed to recycle?

Have YOUR say!

BINTALIBAN

28.04.08, 8:40pm

I cannot be the only one who is sick and tired of petty, vindictive local authorities and jobs worths making our lives a misery.

With regards to Cumbria and their barmy rubbish collection policies I say to the residents who pay their council tax - say enough is enough. Everyone put your bins out at 6.45am, make sure the lids are up and clog up the courts by refusing to pay the fines. What can they do - jail everyone? Its about time "people power" shamed these councils. They work for us, we dont work for them. The law abiding citizens of this country are an easy target and generate a lot of cash through petty fines. If only they came down on burglars, muggers, and drug addicts in the same way.

Vote them out at the next local elections.

RECYCLING

23.03.08, 7:52pm

With all this furore about recycling, this, that and the other, in the name of saving the planet/environmental protection etc.
Who is pocketting the millions upon millions of pounds being made from this ???
Make no mistake, the saying where there is muck there is money, in this case masses of money, is being made day in and day out.
Someone has a rough idea how much, so spill the beans and let us poor soles into the secret.
It may have a good effect on peoples attitude to re-cycling, instead of making us all out to be eco-slobs.

RUBBISH 'POLICE'

22.03.08, 6:32pm

We have a massive list of things you can't put into green bins - I recycle as much as possible but the black normal bin is still full after 2 weeks and that's just with a household of 2, god help those with kids.

COMPLETELY RIDICULOUS

17.03.08, 7:59pm

I think this is a perfect example of "because they can". So basically, the fuller the bin, the more urgently you need to get rid of the rubbish, the less chance you have of actually getting rid of it. What kind of logic is that? The joke will be on them when we start dumping our rubbish elsewhere.

COUNCIL WASTERS

12.03.08, 5:24pm

Nowadays councils have a free hand to do what they want and this is just not right. Council tax rises of 5% could pay for a regular collection and get rid of this ridiculous two week rubbish collection that has been forced upon us. I now receive a worst service then a year ago whilst “Labour claim things can only get better”. Maybe I am missing the point, how can a two weekly rubbish collection be a better service? And how can paying more council tax improve the environment if this money is paying for these over PC correct idiots to make poor decisions? Maybe Gordon Brown and his cirrus of clowns can answer this question; councils just shift the blaming following government policy.

This reduction of service will of course lead to more fly tip and if this PAYGO rubbish tax kicks in then we see even more deserted bin bags on our streets. Those who live in ivory towers don’t care, those in government still don’t care so what chance have we got?

In our current climate rats are reproducing faster humans are, this presents us with a worrying picture, just think under this government we now have more rats on our streets and running our country then ever before, we now have more dirty streets, and piled up bins and an array of diseases but yet councils insist everything is fine.

The underlining issue is how do we cope with more rubbish, answer get rid of labour and its councils, bring back weekly collections and educate those who are unwilling to listen. With any luck we set some the rats that call themselves MP’S catch in the trap as well.

WRONG TARGET

11.03.08, 11:32am

We are living in a world of idiotic edicts from all parts of government.

Its very simple, if you want to reduce the amount of rubbish collected and thrown into landfill you need to attack it at its source.

You simply charge Manufacturers for packaging, lets face it everything is over packaged.

You charge 50p for every plastic carrier bag in every shop/business. You only allow recycled paper bags for use in the vegetable section of supermarkets

You provide convenient recycling places for all items that can be recycled

There are probably a lot more options ive not even thought about

Given seven days i am sure the government could come up with a simple national plan
