Willy, last year's Best in Show winnner

Wednesday March 5,2008

By Mark Reynolds

Twig the border collie came over a tad shy yesterday as she helped launch Crufts.

In her day to day life, the seven-year-old bitch is a working sheepdog – so she can be forgiven for not being quite prepared for her close-up.

She’ll soon be completely in her element, rounding up sheep at the world’s most famous dog show in a special display on Saturday.

Almost 23,000 dogs will be taking part in this year’s four-day event, which kicks off tomorrow at Birmingham NEC. It is one of the biggest shows in Crufts history,

second only to the centenary show in 1991.

Around 1,100 canine contestants are from overseas. They include an unusual breed making its debut from the Netherlands.

The Kooikerhondje – a cute spaniel-like breed, traditionally used for duck-hunting – will have its own category after being officially recognised by The Kennel Club.

Caroline Kisko, club secretary, said: “When a new breed comes into the country, it isn’t automatically accepted into Crufts.

“Over time we will allow them to be recognised.

“Breeders have to prove that the breed is healthy and they are following good procedure in breeding them.”

This year organisers will be stressing the importance of responsible ownership and good training after a number of highly publicised dog attacks in recent years.

Owners can sign up to its Good Citizen Dog Scheme.
