UK NEWSSNP WINS BATTLE TO SCRAP GRADUATE ENDOWMENTFriday February 29,2008 By Paul GilbrideHOLYROOD last night narrowly approved SNP plans to scrap the £2,289 endowment fee that Scottish students pay after graduating and finding a job.
MSPs voted by 67 to 61 to get rid of the charge, which replaced tuition fees north of the Border three years ago. [>
Last night, both the SNP Government and the Liberal Democrats, who supported the abolition, claimed it meant the return of free higher education in Scotland. [>
Education Secretary Fiona Hyslop said it was “great news” for students and added: “We believe access to education should be based on ability to learn, not ability to pay. [>
[> “The removal of the graduate endowment fee is great news for current and future students and last year’s graduates, helping to significantly reduce their debt burden.” [>
She described the abolition of the fee as a “downpayment” on plans to tackle student debt. [>
The SNP had pledged to ditch student debt in its election manifesto and Ms Hyslop added: “We believe that debt, and the fear of debt, can be a real deterrent and can actually prevent some young people going to university. [>
“That’s why we’re committed to relieving the debt burden and abolishing the graduate endowment fee is the first stage of our plans.” [>
Both Labour and the Tories were left licking their wounds after failing to force the Government to instigate a review into the future of university funding. [>
The abolition of the fee was achieved with the backing of the Greens and Independent MSP Margo MacDonald. [>
The Liberal Democrats backed the bill as long as the Government promised to look at the issue of a guaranteed minimum income for students, which was a manifesto commitment. [>
But, according to Parliament voting records, also among those who backed it in the final vote was Labour rebel Elaine Smith, MSP for Coatbridge and Chryston. [>
Her Labour colleague Richard Baker, a former president of the National Union of Students in Scotland, voted against scrapping the charge. [>
[> Around 50,000 students will benefit from the abolition of the graduate endowment. Those who graduated last summer will no longer be required to pay, and those who will graduate this year will also benefit, along with those currently at university and future generations of students. [>
But Labour’s Education spokeswoman Rhona Brankin claimed ministers had “failed miserably” to produce persuasive evidence that simply scrapping the charge would increase the numbers going to university and would do nothing to alleviate student poverty. [>
She called for an independent commission to be established to examine future funding of the sector and student support. [>
Ms Brankin said: “We believe the time is right to set a long-term direction for our universities and to support students.” [>
Tory deputy leader Murdo Fraser backed her call for an independent review. [>

You're obviously a very bitter little person who is wholly ignorant of Scotland and it's people. Before you start rattling off insults and derogatory comments you should do a little research.
When you've stopped typing with your forehead try looking in at tinyurl.com/3bcutz or tinyurl.com/ywoybx, you may learn something.
I note that you like to propagate the myth that Scots hate the English. Totally untrue, it's Westminster and it's inhabitants their ire is directed at.
It's narrow minded racists like you who give the rest of your decent countrymen a bad name. Unfortunately we have the likes of you up here too, we find your kind in every country in the world.

Oh dear, we dont like the truth do we. You mention Oil & energy rich. I suppose they have been drilled for, and transported in pipelines laid and paid for by scittish money? Don't make me laugh. You can believe all the lies put out by the moronic nationalists who tell you idiots that independence would be great and what a fantastic place scutland will be when free of ENGLISH tyranny. What a load of crap. Who will pay for your Police, Army, Benefits, Government, Health, etc etc. It is easy to dream, while the ENGLISH pound is propping you all up and keeping you from starvation, but the reality of life without the ENGLISH pound would be far different than the one that is envisioned.
You call me racist, but I am nothing of the sort, I just hate bleating sponging twats, wherever they come from. If the tam o' shanter fits then wear it.

"Lucabrasi " (nice English name)
From where I'm standing, it's YOU who is doing the whingeing, not the Scottish people, who are making huge strides towards independence. Because we know we'd be a lot better off without having to contribute to the UK's stupid wars, nuclear weapons, London Olympics, etc etc. Oil rich, energy rich Scotland, being told it's "too poor"? Why do you think that is?
My irony is obviously wasted on you. So you revert to being a bitter racist prick. You've never been to Scotland in your puff.
Scotland more than pays its way. It gets less back than other parts of the UK. It gets less back than London! Go and dig up the facts before making an arse of yourself online.
p.s. get the drinks in.

I suppose I understand why you used those other Country's as examples, but your theory falls flat on its face with One regard. The scottish are too tight, lazy and pissed to do anything for themselves. You have compared yourselves with Country's that are quite hard working and industrious and have given a bit more to the World than a bleeding heart and sob story. Why can't you just admit that you need the ENGLISH pound like you all need oxygen. With so many people out of work (by choice) you are never going to be able to cover your benefits bill (unfortunately) Why do the scotish expect that the ENGLISH taxpayer should be overjoyed to be feeding and paying for a bunch of people who moan and whinge about how great a nation they are/were? To be fair it is easier to talk rather than actually do something and we all know as a nation you can talk, (yawn)
It is a fact that the truth is nearer to Rab C Nesbitt than alec salmon, ask anybody who comes back from visiting that godforsaken pit.
Stop moaning, get your idle wasters into work, declare total independance and stop holding out those shaking nicotene stained hands for the ENGLISH pound. Perhaps then people might actually believe your whingeings.

Oh dear, someone is all upset!
Sorry but we're too poor to pay for anything, and need to be joined to England, or we'll all DIE of abject poverty! And we'll be invaded too!
That's what we've been told for centuries. Don't tell me you heard the same?
Yes, we need to vote Labour repeatedly, or we'll be be finished. Like the Norwegians were when they got independence. Or the Icelanders. Or the Irish. I mean, they just died out altogether, didn't they?
p.s. mine's a pint of lager.
It's your round, you muppet, get your wallet out..

WE PAY FOR EVERYTHING ELSE IN scotland WE MIGHT AS WELL PAY FOR WHISKY AND FAGS FOR EVERYBODY. I'M SURE THAT IS COMING NEXT ANYWAY. FOR GOD'S SAKE HAVE SOME DIGNITY AND PAY FOR SOMETHING YOURSELVES.
