SIR PAUL ON SONG WITH A GONG AT THE BRIT AWARDS

PAUL McCartney was the star of last night’s Brit Awards for his Outstanding Contribution to Music.

The former Beatle received the award from Kylie Minogue, after specially asking for the Australian star earlier this week.

Sir Paul, 65, admitted that Kylie – who picked up her own award for Best International Female Artist – was his “first choice” to introduce him. They had struck up a friendship on Jools Holland’s BBC TV show last year.

He delighted fans by performing a Beatles medley, putting on a brave face after the stress of his divorce hearing.

Last night’s event at Earls Court in London was one of the most lavish to date. It was presided over by Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne, wearing millions of pounds worth of borrowed Chopard jewels.

The theme was glam versus rock and the couple compered the show from two huge thrones, draped in glittering Union Flags.

Even singer Amy Winehouse was there, despite being halfway through her drug rehabilitation course. She performed her hit single Valerie, recorded with Mark Ronson.

Brits chairman Ged Doherty said: “Although she’s not eligible for an award, as her album with Mark was released the year before last, Amy is a huge talent. The show would never have been complete without her.”

Take That were the first act to pick up an award as Best Live Act. The Manchester band originally split up in 1996 before reforming.

Lebanese-born British singer Mika Penniman was chosen by Radio 1 listeners as Best British Breakthrough Act and Adele took the Critics’ Choice award, while Kanye West was Best International Male Solo Artist.

Adding to the glamour were Girls Aloud star Cheryl Cole, 24, who dazzled in a yellow mini-dress with a puma-buckle belt, who had just returned from a break in Thailand and Los Angeles. Her band was nominated for Best Group.

Also shining was Strictly Come Dancing winner Alesha Dixon, 29, in a daring red mini-dress.
