ROCK BILL CLEARS FIRST MAJOR HURDLE
David Cameron has called for Alistair Darling to be sacked
Emergency legislation to nationalise Northern Rock has cleared its first major hurdle in the Commons.
Despite Tory opposition, the Banking (Special Provisions) Bill was given a second reading by 367 votes to 164, a majority of 203.
The Bill, which provides for the troubled bank to be put into temporary public ownership, will undergo immediate detailed line-by-line committee stage examination.
It is expected to complete its Commons stages just after midnight before moving to the Lords on Wednesday with the aim of it becoming law by the end of the week.
Chancellor Alistair Darling defended his decision to rush the legislation through Parliament insisting it was impossible to run a bank unless it was clear "who is in charge".
Faced with concerns about unfair competition from other banks, he disclosed that discussions would be held with bank and building society associations before submitting proposals for state aid approval by the European Commission.
"We won't be involved in the day to day management of NR. But we do need to approve its business plan. We want to make sure it is prudent, that it's sensible, and protects the interests of the taxpayer. But also we want to make sure it avoids distortions."
Mr Darling, who Tory leader David Cameron has said should be sacked over the banking debacle, indicated shareholders could expect little if anything for their investment.
Compensation for them, he said, will be decided by an independent valuer on the basis that financial support for Northern Rock had been withdrawn.
Mr Darling faced further embarrassment when Liberal Democrat treasury spokesman Vince Cable, who first advocated nationalisation, seized on a BBC report that Northern Rock's new executive chairman, Ron Sandler, is a non-domiciled taxpayer.

THEY HAVNT GOT A CLUE...
19.02.08, 11:22am
these couple of no-hopers havnt got an absolute clue, "Dopey davey and his side kick, no clue"
They havnt got an absolute clue.
This government is not at all even in the slightest worried about the no-hoper opposition that is why he was so bold as to make this move.
They know that the "great pretenders" have about as much chance of worrying this government, as "maggie" has of making a comeback.
What a diabolical state of affairs, the country is heading headlong into complete and utter oblivion steered by Barmy Brown and his PC cohorts. and what have the opposition got to offer --- " " yes thats right a big fat zero, with the rim knocked off.
Its a total disgrace, a national scandal a tragedy of epic proportions.
over one tenth of our country handed on a plate to the enemy, the young high on drugs or drink or turned feral and indiscriminately attacking the few remaining decent folk half of which are in a stupor of apathy, or themselves have drunk themselves silly, while the pensioners who fought for the freedom of this once great nation, now have to choose between eating or keeping warm.
Government shapes culture and environment, makes laws that either enable or disable the normal functioning of a society.
THEY are responsible for every feral youth, every murder, every illegal immigrant, every terrorist on our soil, every pensioner who is dying from the cold.
THIS TOTALLY FAILED MULTICULTURAL, POLITICALLY CORRECT GARBAGE HAS RUINED US.
WILL SOMEBODY IN POWER STAND UP AND GET THIS LOT SORTED OUT .... NOW
