THE Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams came under fire from his predecessor last night as the British public threw him a lifeline in the row over his controversial comments on sharia law.
Lord Carey called Dr Williams’s views “disastrous for Britain”. But a Sunday Express poll revealed that two-thirds of the public believe Dr Williams should keep his job as head of the Anglican Church, despite sparking the highly damaging debate over a separate law for Muslims.
Asked if he should have resigned, 62 per cent said “No”. Only one in five people – 22 per cent – felt he should step down.
When the Sunday Express gave him the result of our poll in Cambridge yesterday Dr Williams showed a palpable sense of relief. Although he would not utter a word, he broke into a smile and silently nodded his gratitude at the news. Our ICM poll indicated that more than a third of people in the country – 35 per cent – believe that he “betrayed” core Christian values by saying Muslims should have their own sharia laws. The figure rose to 40 per cent among professed Christians.
Just 47 per cent of the general public said he had not betrayed the values at the heart of the Anglican Church.
There are no signs that the country is ready formally to adopt sharia laws, however, despite the public coming to the defence of Archbishop Williams. Asked if aspects of sharia law should run alongside British law, 63 per cent said “No”, while 19 per cent said “Yes”. Surprisingly, some 35 per cent of people aged between 18 and 24 warmed to the idea.
Lord Carey was unequivocal though. “His conclusion that Britain will eventually have to concede some place in law for aspects of sharia is a view I cannot share,” he said.
“His acceptance of some Muslim laws within British law would be disastrous for the nation.” Archbishop Williams tried to maintain an impassive expression yesterday when was forced to run the gauntlet as he left Great St Mary’s Church, Cambridge, after attending a memorial service.
More than 200 people had gathered at the church’s doors and many angrily shouted, “Resign, resign” as the procession passed.
Dr Williams, 57, had spoken in tribute to one of Cambridge’s most respected academics, the Rev Professor Charles Moule, who died last year, aged 98.
His constant fidgeting and pained expression while waiting to deliver his sermon betrayed a discomfort at having a public commitment at such a sensitive time.
Staff at St Mary’s had privately expressed the hope that the controversy would not hijack the memorial event attended by more than 1,000 Cambridge dons and relatives but it seemed a lost cause.
The Archbishop’s remarks have attracted condemnation from members of the General Synod, senior theologians, Government ministers and even moderate Muslims.
Among those calling for his resignation yesterday was Alison Ruoff, a member of the Synod, who said: “He has been a disaster for the Church of England. He vacillates, he is a weak leader and does not stand for the Church.”
The row erupted after Dr Williams stated that Britain had to “face up to the fact” that officially sanctioning some aspects of sharia law would improve relations with some minorities who could not relate to Britain’s legal system.
“Nobody in their right mind would want to see in this country the kind of inhumanity that has sometimes been associated with the practice of the law in some Islamic states,” he said on Thursday.
“But there are ways of looking at marital disputes, for example, which provide an alternative to divorce courts as we understand them.”
Sharia law is practised in a handful of countries including Sudan, Saudi Arabia and Libya. It represents the extreme side of Islam, advocating harsh and almost Biblical punishment for crimes such as theft, adultery and blasphemy, including the cutting off of limbs and death by stoning. It is also seen as denying women’s rights, forcing them to cover themselves with the burka.
The Archbishop’s contentious comments came just two weeks after the Sunday Express revealed that sections of Britain’s inner cities were already holding private sharia courts to judge over a range of matters.
SHARIA LAW

In many parts of this country it is unsafe to walk the streets what price for our so called freedom. Freedom to be mugged, raped, be burnt out of your home by street yobs who the Police cannot control and indeed will often not even respond if called. Its ok for you indignant middle classes living in your nice middle class areas to be so indignant but I think Sharia law would be great for controling these yobs. If you lived in fear from our home grown hoodies and druggies you too would want to see some real justice handed out.
This clown has been useless from the start, as was his predecessor. We don't want apologists for the evil doctrine of Islam, as head of the church we need true leaders who will fight their corner against an enemy within. Also I cant believe the number of dopey females who are lining up to follow Williams stance, they will be the first to suffer at the hands of the mad mullahs who think that women are third rate citizens to be treated as slaves and breeding machines.
I hope all these people advocating sharia law are prepared to have a beard at a certain length at all times, and a wife/girlfriend/sister/mother who is not allowed out of doors unless she is covered from head to toe! Oh, and if you want to send your daughters to school .. forget it .. you won't be able to do that either!
as the Mr RW forgotten the lady who was recently
threatened with a public lashing for making a HUGE error
in letting Muslim children call their mascot teddy bear
Mohamed and all sorts of " one offs" that are to numerous to mention rapidly building up to a peak
Of course the public support the Archbishop they understand that sharia law is just whats needed to sort out the yobs, drug dealers, muggers, drunks and assorted riff raff that have taken over Britains streets. Dont tag them or give them ASBOs ftreat them to Sharia law. Humilate them by making them attend Muslim courts for punishment.Lets retake the streets for decent people. This is just what we need!

POLLS CAN TELL LIES
11.02.08, 11:24am
poll statistics can be made to read whatever you like. How long is a piece of string or how big is the fish you caught?
The results of a poll depend on where, and of whom you asked the question.
Go into HM prison and ask the resident murderers this:
Do you think we should re-instsate the death penalty?
Apart from the odd one or two who wish to commit suicide by hanging [due to intense remorse] one can be pretty sure of the answers.
The question is who did the Express ask and where in Cambridge were they? And why have they appeared to manipulate the figures.
Well; Express, can you enlighten us?
It might be an idea to run an on line poll [strictly one vote each] and then we'll see the real
figures.
How about it?
