COMPLAINTS OVER MPS' FINANCES RISE
The furore over the Derek Conway affair has opened the floodgates for complaints about MPs from the public, the Tory chairman of the Commons standards committee has revealed.
Sir George Young, whose committee investigated the case against Mr Conway, said it had turned the spotlight onto the "complaints machinery" and numbers were soaring.
His comments, in an interview for BBC Radio 4's The Week in Westminster, raise the prospect of more MPs having their financial affairs investigated, although he stressed it was not yet clear if any of the complaints have "substance".
"People have read the Conway report and a lot of constituents have remembered some long-lost grievance about a member of Parliament and a lot of complaints are now coming in," Sir George said.
These went first to the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards, John Lyon, he advised, adding: "I think it's fair to say he's going to be quite busy over the next few weeks, sifting these complaints.
"We will have to see how many have substance. But certainly the Conway affair has raised the profile of the MPs' complaints machinery."
Sir George continued: "I do think we have a job to do now to restore the reputation of the House of Commons as a whole and we must respond to this challenge - post Conway - that we can put our House in order."
Commons speaker Michael Martin has announced a "root-and-branch" inquiry into all aspects of MPs' expenses, after Conservative MP Mr Conway was suspended over payments to his son.
It is not expected to report back to the House of Commons until MPs return from the summer recess in October.
The Prime Minister has already ordered Labour MPs to declare any family members who they pay from parliamentary allowances, while Conservative leader David Cameron has told frontbench Tories to do the same and urged backbenchers to follow suit.

WHITEWASH ON THE WAY
09.02.08, 9:08pm
The allegations made about MP's regarding the alleged employment of relations etc and the claims for expenses (which in many ways is surely much worse) are and must be crimes.
It seems already that most MP's (all parties) are involved in self centred activities so what hope is there that there will be anyting other than a WHITEWASH as the investigation/enquiry is by other MP's - why should they (or will they) be any different to CONWAY etc.?

COMPLAINTS OVER MPS' FINANCES RISE

Gravy & Train come to mind. It would appear that in all walks of political life from local councillors to euro mps our representatives claim as much as they can and who says what they can claim - why themselves.
No one wants them to be out of pocket but matters have gone far enough to the level of abusing the system.
Why can some of our representatives claim the minimum and others claim every single penny that they can squeeze out of the system?

JUST PURE GREED

I would be very interested in finding out, just what exactly a MP can claim for. Can we have a complete breakdown of each any every MPs expenses.
Mr Conway states that there is little difference between his son working for him part time, and working for Mcdonalds. Dont recall many part time Mc-job workers on 40K, infact not herad of many full time Mc job workers on 40K either.

MAFIA POLITICIANS
09.02.08, 11:33am
Recently 30 mafia leaders were arrested, but I did not see any crook poitician amongst them, some of them had ordered murders.
This other mafia lot are untouchables and people can only get rid of them by refraining at all from voting.
The mother of democracy - Parliament - is now under threat as can be seen with hugh barricades and blocks placed, with gun totting police, to protect these corrupt politicians. The right of protest in front of parliament is now also curtailed.
If these lot have been honest, then there would have been no need for waste of public funds to do so to protect these unscrupulous lot.
