Winehouse has checked in to rehab

Thursday January 24,2008

By Jack Teague for express.co.uk

TROUBLED singer Amy Winehouse was finally admitted to rehab tonight in bid to battle her growing drug problem.

A statement from the star’s record company, Universal, said: “Amy decided to enter the facility today after talks with her record label, management, family and doctors.

“She has come to understand that she requires specialist treatment to continue her ongoing recovery from drug addiction and prepare for her planned appearance at the Grammy Awards.

“Amy entered the facility by mutual agreement and continues to receive the full support of all concerned.”

The statement went on: “Amy is the most talented and important musical artist of her generation and has made huge strides on her road to recovery.

“Universal Music Group wants nothing more than to see her take the time she needs to come back to full health and fulfil her incredible potential with the label.

“The label has always had the best interests of Amy at heart and has been guided by her family and doctors in the last few months as to the best direction to take.

The singer has been forced to cancel a planned appearance at the NRJ Awards in France this Saturday.

The announcement comes just days after the Back To Black star was caught on video apparently smoking crack cocaine.

It marked a new low for the 24-year-old, who is also battling addiction to other drugs.

Earlier today her father Mitch Winehouse hinted that she would be going into a rehab clinic.

“I don’t want to say too much yet but today could be a red letter day for Amy,” he told Vanessa Feltz on radio station BBC London 94.9.

Mr Winehouse, a London cab driver, said the family had considered having her sectioned under the Mental Health Act.

But the authorities said it was not possible because the singer “is not a danger to herself”.

VERY SAD.....BUT

24.01.08, 11:16pm

It has to be said that it is a damning inditment that this young woman seems to be becoming even more well known for her antics off the stage than on. IIll prepared for the limelight , or inherantly prone to addiction who knows? What must be said that she is proving to be a very inappropreate role model for the young that would seek to idolise and emulate her, and that is the sad part. Perhaps it would be better for all concerned if she faded from the spot light as she seems so ill prepared to cope with it.
