PETER HAIN RESIGNS AS DONATIONS ROW GROWS
Peter Hain has resigned from the cabinet

PETER HAIN resigned today as Work and Pensions Secretary and Secretary of State for Wales as the controversy over donations to his deputy leadership campaign escalated.
The news came minutes after the Electoral Commission announced it was referring the affair to the Metropolitan Police.
In a statement this afternoon Mr Hain said: “In view of the decision of the Electoral Commission today I have come to the conclusion that I have no alternative but to resign as Secretary of State for Work and Pensions and Secretary of State for Wales, and I have now done so.
“Immediately I realised that the problem had arisen I issued a statement on November 24, and I severely and seriously regret the mistake in declaring donations late, and I have co-operated as soon as I was able to with the Electoral Commission, providing all the details they have asked for.
“And I will of course co-operate in the future with the police and with any other authorities that wish to ask questions about this.
He added: “Can I say too that I have found it a real privilege working for Labour in Government since 1997 as a minister.
“I have very much enjoyed working as Secretary of State for Work and Pensions and as Secretary of State for Wales carrying forward the values and the policies of full employment, and abolishing child poverty and justice for pensioners, democratic reform in Wales and all the other policies that I strongly believe in and which this Government stands for.
“I am very grateful to my wife Elizabeth for her steadfast support, to my family, to Labour MP colleagues, ministerial colleagues and also to my fantastic constituency party in Neath and my Neath constituents as well.
“I will continue to support this Government and will continue to offer the Prime Minister all the support that I can. I am grateful for his decision to appoint me to the Cabinet and wish him and the Government all the best.
“And I want to thank too this department here and my Wales Office staff for all the support they have given me and ministerial colleagues that I have worked for. They have been a fantastic team. Thank you very much indeed,” he said.
After a "through review" of more than £103,000 belatedly declared to the Electoral Commission, the elections watchdog had handed the matter over to the police.
Downing Street said in a statement: “Peter Hain has made his statement. The Prime Minister has accepted Peter Hain’s resignation. There will be an exchange of letters in due course.”
Culture Secretary James Purnell is to take over Hain's position.
It is understood that Mr Hain phoned the Prime Minister at around 11.30am and informed him he had been told by the Electoral Commisssion of the police investigation.
Mr Hain is understood to have offered his resignation at that point without hesitation.
The resignation will come as a huge blow to Brown.
Police are already probing proxy donations to Labour of more than £600,000 from North East property developer David Abrahams, which Mr Brown has said were “unlawful” and not properly declared.
That case has already claimed the resignation of Labour’s general secretary, Peter Watts.
Shadow work and pensions secretary Chris Grayling said: “Peter Hain’s resignation was inevitable and the right thing to do given the Electoral Commission’s decision.
“What is important now is for Gordon Brown to take rapid action to restore effective leadership to a department that has clearly been distracted by the events of the last few weeks.”
ANYONE FROM BNP OUT THERE?

Seems to have gone awfully quiet on this thread.
Let me ask another question then.
What would the UKIP do about MPs salaries and gold plated pensions?
Come on, someone MUST have an answer?!
Is it just that, whichever party you're in, you're automatically on the 'gravy train'???

Obviously this is good news, BUT, the greedy snouts are STILL allowed to keep £43,000 a year, in EXPENSES, with NO RECEIPTS for anything under £250!
It's time the English started fighting back, and this abuse of tax money by thieving politicians, was stopped.
Out pf interest, I wonder if someone from the BNP would tell me, if you ever gain power, what's your position on MPs salaries and gold plated pensions - I mean, what would you do to reduce them, or wouldn't you do anything at all?

Excellent News!Nu Labour, corrupt, scumbag goes down.Know this, you lying/corrupt flith, the truth will out and your time will come.To apply such words to Horrible Hain as honourable and decent just demonstrate to me how low these fools have sunk.If Hain could have spoken freely i`m certain he would have bleated about why pick on me?Afterall,he would go on to say,all my colleagues are doing exactly the same as I did.He would futher explain that he thought he would be safe running with the heard. If he had said this he would have been so much nearer the truth. For the truth is that all these corrupt lot are at it.Don`t forget this applies just as much to Dave`s kissahoodies and the Perverts Party. The Limp Dims do not really matter either way. They tend to be more morally corruptSo a good day overall. But still a lot to do to get rid of the cancer at the very centre of our country. If I had one political wish it would be to live to see the day we leave the EU and see the end of the three Parties of mass Corruption.Ok two wishes then!
