MAN DENIES RACHEL NICKELL MURDER

Thursday January 24,2008

A man accused of killing Rachel Nickell on Wimbledon Common more than 15 years ago will face trial in November.

Robert Napper, 41, pleaded not guilty to murdering the former model and young mother on July 15, 1992.

He appeared by videolink for the 10-minute hearing at the Old Bailey.

Napper, 41, formerly of south London, wore a black checked shirt as he listened to the proceedings before the Common Serjeant of London Judge Brian Barker.

The case will be relisted in March for further directions and the trial will take place on November 11.

Miss Nickell, 23, was stabbed 49 times and sexually assaulted in a frenzied attack after she took her two-year-old son for a walk on the Common.

Colin Stagg, from Roehampton, west London, was charged with the murder but cleared in 1994 after a judge threw out the case because police had used a "honey trap" plot to encourage him to confess.
